Recipes for 400 RWHP, both 12 and 24 Valves

Exactly as stated, what are some tried and true setups to make that power. I want streetable power, with out a ton of smoke. I understand that the drivetrain will need upgrades, but I'm trying to get an idea of what stuff is going to cost so I can budget my near future truck purchase. Unsure of which one I will get yet, so would like options. I am certain the truck will have at least 200k miles when I buy one, so internal work isn't out of the question, as it may need an overhaul already.

I should add that the truck will be a manual, that might make a difference in the setups.

To give you an idea, my truck in my sig made 398hp at the wheels the day I bought it with the Quadzilla. I'm sure I can break the 400 mark now, but I just haven't had the time to put it on the dyno again. I may be able to get it on the dyno tomorrow, since it's already set up and ready to go, but it all depends on whether I need to pack up and go to Toronto. If that's the case, it'll be another couple of weeks before I'll have the time to do it. If not, I'll let you know what I get. The Quad is a pretty good investment, but I'm considering the TST. I'm not sure if I want to put the money out for something that'll only give me a few more HP, but I've heard some good things about the TST, and that's why I'm considering it.

I'll post here again if I can do the truck again.

It kind of Depends on what year of 12 valve you get, but a combo that should have most any 12 valve there would be:

#0 plate
4k GSK
370 Injectors(I'd get new Era's)
191 Delivery Valves

You will have a pretty good haze, and EGT's will get hot fairly quick, but it should run pretty good. Something like a Sled Puller 62 would be a good turbo to run with it to keep it cool, and add some power

I did a hot 376 with my truck. With a Smarty, HRVP, 100hp injectors instead of my 80's (something like Mach 1.6 or 2's) and a bigger turbo, should be a nice 400+ hp.

Well, to keep the EGT's in check, what would be a good turbo to go with? I'm leaning more towards the 12 Valve now, due to the price/availability of parts and reliability of the injection system.

I saw this pulling vid, and once the truck gets wound up and moving, the smoke output is about what I'd think of as the max. It's too much for me when he first starts going though.

So if I can get less, I'd be ecstatic. But I could live with that kind of smoke, just less to get the truck going.

Thats why with a 12 valve I suggested 191's instead of laser cuts. Laser cuts smoke like crazy. An SPS62 with the combo i mentioned earlier will smoke about like Garret's(in the vid) spooling up, but will clear up good at WOT

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. Didn't know who's that was or the setup. Is there any way to clean it up on the low end, or is that the nature of the beast? There is another vid on that site that is labeled first pull, with a very light haze. I'd love to have that. Thank you for the help.

You can tune out some of the bottom end smoke with the starwheel, and AFC housing. Garret is running a pretty big turbo, so it takes him a second to light it. If you ran a SPS62 it should spool pretty fast. You can roll into the throttle with your foot instead of mashing it all at once to keep it from blacking out the road too. My truck will smoke like crazy till it spools up if I just mat it, but If I roll into the throttle easy until boost comes up to about 10psi, then step down on it, it doesent smoke near as much, and the turbo actually lights faster that way in my opinion. But yes, you can play with the pump, and get the smoke before the turbo lights to thin out a lot compared to garret's. A 100 plate would be better for you, because it limits the bottom end fueling, but lets it scream in the higher RPM's. A #0 plate gives full fueling even on the low end if you have your starwheel loose, and the AFC housing forward.

Alright, thanks for the info. The 100 plate sounds about what I want, from what you described. So an SPS62, 100 plate, 370 injectors, 4K GSK, and the 191 delivery valves should do the trick? It doesn't have to be exactly 400 hp, something up there would be nice. I've been looking around and think I found the right truck, it's a 97 Ext Cab 4x4 5speed. Which pump would that have? Thanks again.

If you tune the pump, I have seen 400 Hp runs on stock 215 injectors.. Made one run at 360 on a stock turbo but EGT's in the meltdown area..

I also forgot, you will need to advance the timing to 17* or so, and you will probably need some head work after a little while. The 97 has the 215hp pump which is the best one to have. The 94 and 95 manuals only have a 175hp pump and arent as responsive to mods as the 215.

On a 24V, a smarty and some Mach 4s almost certainly will put you there without tapping the wire!

If you plan on using this kins of power regularly, you'll need to upgrade the turbo to a 62mm-class charger as a minimum.

Also, a stronger clutch is a given...
