Rebuilding DANA 80? What first!

Well I finally got the truck off the ground on stands. Took of Diff cover and found oil pretty clean.

The reason for my inspection is because I suspected too much wear noise while releasing my foot from the brake and touching the pedal to accelerate. It would make a tug noise like the brakes were stuck and let off when I move. The brakes are not staying stuck because the truck moves freely when I let go of brakes.

As I put it in drive it hits hard and as I put in reverse it hits hard also.

My conclusion is driving me to replace spider gears only.
Why because I see much wear shining on the surface of the spdier gear teeth. All of them. The ring and pinion seem good.

I noticed the Dana 80 had no limited slip and I was wondering if I should just get one now that it's apart.

I'm confused but motivated to finish.

I wonder if I just replace the spider gears and if that will rid the play in the forward and reverse of the shaft.
Or if I should just do all carrier bearing, new ring and pinion(or do I reused those) and a new power lok or something similiar.

What do the more experienced rear end rebuild guys think or do in my shoes!

Thks in advance sorry so long! T

If you are not familiar with setting up third members, I would recommend taking it too a reputable shop. Have them rebuild it and re install it yourself. IMO, you should replace all the gears and bearings while you are in there. BTW, your symptoms to me sound like u joints...so be sure to check them first. If you do not set up the third member properly, the noise will most likely be worse than when you started. Last, if you have a few extra bucks definately install a limited slip or locker.

Yeah I hear you.

I've done rear ends before. I'm gioing to a machine shop anyway to use their press.

I've check everything else and it's not u joints or the leaf springs/mounts.

Important
The rear drive shaft has a bushing holding the middle of the driveshaft tot he frame between the trans and the rearend. Is that supposed to have some play when you try and move it with your hands. The bushing is not crushed but could it be shrunk from heat or just from handling all that pounding from holding that shaft in place????

I hope my air tools and compressor can get the new nut back onthere good!

Anyone know if symtoms of worn is visible??

This is just a thought but did you look at the transfer case??? Maybe the chain has some play in it. If you drop the fluid that might show something you if something s going bad.

Yeah I'm taking down the drive line and looking at the output shaft on the ttansfer case output housing. It seems to have some play. Could be the output shaft or anything behind it, like the chain maight have play.

I think also the rear drive shaft has a hanger that supprts the long shafts to the frame with a bushing. That is alittle worn and the traction bars seem alittle more worn than normal.
Just looking at other things since the diff looks tight!

Thks!
