Rear Wheelstuds Loose - Cant get tires off
Well i tried to roatate my tires yesterday on my '99 DRW....3 of the wheelstuds would just spin, the whole stud itself os loose, but i cant get the nut off now
Also, it appears the previous owner had the studs changed or soemthing......all my wheelnuts are the same size EXCEPT the drivers side rear....they are 2 socket sizes bigger.....and these are the ones giving me the problem.
Now hows the easiest way to get the tire off? Cut them off with a torch, etc...
Any idea's? I've never taken the drums off or anything, so im not too sure how or what "specialty" sockets/tools/seals i may need. Any help would be great

I would use an impact on a low setting and start tightening the lug and see if it will pull the stud back in. That's how I seated the studs when I replaced mine, although I didn't have the wheels on.
I lost some lug nuts and ended up getting 1 1/8" nuts because the 15/16" stock ones with the right thread pitch were really expensive (something like over $100 for 8 and only available from dodge I think.
Whan you do get the nuts off and the wheel the drums will come right off
(you should have to adjust the brake shoes in to get the drum off with the adjuster). From there you just take a big hammer and knock the studs out of the hub and replace. If you don't want to pull the axle use the impact the and lug nut and washers to seat the new stud in the hub. I got mine from dorman. I got them from carquest I think I can look tomorrow at work and tell you for sure.

The other thing you could try is actually breaking the studs off while the nuts are still on. I don't know how easy it would be on these trucks, but I had to do it once on a Toyota. Get the biggest hammer you can swing with one hand, and use place a drift on the lug nut and hit the nut REALLY hard. A couple good smacks, and it should break the lug stud clean off and you can drive the remainder out of the back of the drum with a punch. Good luck.

The best way to do this without destroying the rims or anything else would be to remove the axle and then remove the nut so the wheel and drum assembly come off the truck in one piece. Now you hold the back side of the stud or if that doesnt work spot weld it on so you can atleast get the nuts off.
Once the wheel if off have a close look at the wheel studs and if need be order the proper studs so all the nuts are the same.
Even if the hole is beat on the hub you can put the stud in and weld it in place.
Good Luck

Id go for retightening first.. then with plenty of lube such as pb blaster sprayed all over the thread.. then back it off nice and slow and hopefully it wont hangup and try to spin the stud.

Gothca thanks for the heads up...im gonna try re-tightening this upcoming weekend, if not i'll yank the axles out & remove the "nut" so the drums coems off.....im assuming this "nut" is a rather large one......does anyone know the size so i can pick up the socket beforehand?
I know the studs are still good, so i'll just spot-weld it back on,

If you go to your local jobber he will have the socket in his book. It is a special socket but even up here I only payed something like 30 bucks for mine at the NAPA store.

you could try grinding the stud that sticks out past the lug nut a pair of flat sides, then cherry red the nut and work at it with a crescent wrench while holding the flat sides of the stud with a vice grip, if ya get em out toss those studs and get yourself the next size up, whomp em in good and get the up size nuts to go with em.

This is old school here. Have you ever heard of a nut splitter? I beleive you can get one at Napa. The tool will split the nut right off without harming the stud. It just used a wrench to crack the nut. It is really, I mean really, easy to remove the nut that way.
After that just replace the needed studs and nuts...

Get your new lug nuts here http://www.udxtra.com/products/phoen.../alcoaacc.html (hope that works!)
The part number is 139987. They are 1 1/16".
I would use new studs (CHEAP) and not weld them.
Wheel studs are 9/16-18.

I thought about the nut splitter thing as well, just thought that you may not be able to get the splitter on a lug nut and be able to use it due to the lack of space in the rim.
