Rear End ?'s
Can someone tell me what rear end I have? I have looked everywhere and can find nothing telling me what I have. Under the hood, owners manual, in the glove box, ect.
And secondly, can someone tell me what the problem with the 48re is?
I am new to these trucks so thanks for the help.
I case my truck does not show up in my sig. it's a 2007 5.9 4x4, Auto Trans.
Thanks

Correct there is no problem with the 48re trans. In fact the trans is the improvement of one of the best domestic trannies ever made, the 727 torque flight which saw extensive service from 1966 to about 1989 I think.
It's shortcomming is mainly that it's a four speed instead of a 6 speed. The Allison and the Aison 6's are probably a little better for heavy towing because of the extra two gears.
You hear a LOT of tranny talk on these boards because people are running fueling boxes, bigger turbo's, and a whole host of other mods that increase horsepower above the 48re's design. You do that with ANY tranny and you are gonna have breakage problems. Don't be fooled, the Allison guys have their fair share of talking on the D-max boards. Every other thread just about is that tranny. The Allison won't hold a whole lot more HP than the 48re will, it's a little stronger but not much. However, the 48re is cheaper to build strong than an Ally is. The Ally does not roll off the assembly line to hold much more than stock power either.
The biggest short coming of ALL the auto trannies of the big three is not the tranny at all, it's the stock torque converters. No truck comes off the line with a triple disk locker and good low stall.
The 48re is actually an excellent 4 speed transmission, she just needs a little love to handle 400 hp and up.

yep the torque is what gets it. Very often you'll find on gas engines (I can't speak specifically for the Dodge v-10) you find that peak hp and peak torque are pretty far apart in the power range. The torque comes in at around 3k or so and peak hp will be up around 5.5+k rpm (just an example). The torque on the cummins comes in right off idle and hangs in there very strong throughout the operating range.
a 500hp diesel would put a pretty good pimp slap on a 500 hp gas motor. You wont have a 500 hp gas engine snappin off input shafts and flexplates.
The other factor: well, there just aren't very many SRT 10's on the rode. The cummins probably outnumbers them 50:1 .....besides, you can't put on a aftermarket box on a 10 and get 120 more hp and 200+ lb/ft of torque.
