rear discs on a dually
i know this has been brought up multiple times with the answer always being no. but, how about a set of rotors from an '02 1 ton dually? they have what appears to be almost a 5" offset. obviously the stud holes are only .67" but i'm sure anyone with a drill press could open them up to accommodate our 5/8" studs or have a machine shop do the same.
My grandpa has an '02 1 ton dually running 16" wheels with rear discs and he somehow has clearance around the calipers. i'll have to take a closer look to see just how much. for our trucks, the axle would still have to be unbolted from the hub and removed if ever the rotors had to come off for machining when a brake job is done. the caliper brackets could be welded to the axle tube where necessary or a bracket could be made to match the offset of the rotor and bolted to the mounting flange for the old drum backing plate. just maybe with these rotors, it just might be possible to get disc brakes on a dually. my brain wandered today and the thought of maybe using the newer rotors crossed my mind, so i thought i'd throw it out there.

i know he has a dana 80. definitely bigger axle shafts but, i think the hubs from a first gen dually could be used on those rotors. i'm not sure that they could but that's why i'm posting

hey jimbo486, i put dana 80 undermy 92 w350 4x4 cab &chassis,from an 01 dually with discs on back,best brakes since new. truck weighs 12,200 is a pipeline welding rig. decided to keep going with the 92 and rebuild paint etc. bought 08 sterling 4500 4x4 cab&chassis to build new rig just can,t truck to nice, had 92 from brand new. got 01 rearend with springs for 1300 got put in 4 800.00. looked for kits egr has disc brake kits for rear, does not work very good,from company, said they would fix soon, for i think 1600.00 davec

I have an 01 with rear disc, It may be the same rotor that is on the 2500, You could do a parts search on a parts store site, from wheel flange to disc surface it is 4". My point being you might be able to find a D70 complete with disc easier/cheaper than a D80. Also the wheels on my truck "9 hole" seem to have more backspacing for wider tires.

i'm not talking a d80 swap at all. i'm simply asking if the rotors from a '01 (or whenever discs were available) to present trucks, could be used since they have that offset. i'm aware that 19.5" wheels will clear the calipers, but that's a too much to spend just to run disc brakes. the simple things to think about.... my grandpa's '02 with 16" dual wheels has disc brakes. could those rotors be mounted to a 1st gen hub (with minor modification) and used on a 1st gen dana 70? caliper mounting brackets can be fabricated and bolted/welded wherever necessary. my point being... if an '02 with disc brakes can run 16" wheels and clear the calipers, it seems feasible to use those same rotors adapted to work on a 1st gen dually rear end.

16" wheels clear on a 2nd gen. I doubt you would be able to use D80 brakes on a D70. To do a complete swap on a Dana 80 from drum to discs is over $500 by the time you buy everything. Dana 70's don't have the hub for discs.

cool. that's what i was waiting for. thanks 93fury! better off to just put a dana 80 with discs in the truck if i wanted to go that route. a dana 80 with drums still wouldn't be a bad deal, if i can find one cheap enough. that would give me a wider track width to fit under a standard bed when that time comes.

No problem. I have been thinking of swapping to discs on my D80 but don't know if I want the hassle of having parking brake shoes. I noticed a huge stopping difference when I put the D80 in even with the drum brakes.
