Rear Brakes

Do you have to remove the rear axle to replace the brake shoes and wheel cylinders on a
1999 3500 daul rear wheels 4x4?

Any help is much apreciated.

I don't think so,,, but I've never done it. Send a PM to Dieseldude4x4 because I think he has done it to one of his trucks.

I'm moving this to 2nd Gen forum where you should get quite a few answers from those who have done this.

You do not have to remove the axle and hub but it is easier and you get to check the seals and the play in the axle bearings and adjust if necessary. We removed them on my sons 94 just because the rear seals were leaking and ruined the shoes.

Hey, Thanks

I removed the axle on the one side, but have not removed the hub nut. I think I will leave that alone. So I guess I will use the trick of jacking up the rear end and
starting the engine and going from drive to reverse and slamming on the brakes to loosen up the brake drum.

What is the torque spec for the axle bolts? and should i use lock tight on those bolts?
