I started hearing a hint of grinding from the rear brakes on the way into work yesterday and it went from barely noticeable to pretty bad over the next 30-40 miles.

Took the wheels off last night when I got home and found that the outer pad on the right side was down to the backing plate. Inner pad on that side and both pads on the left are fine, at least a 1/4" or 5/16" of pad material left. Obviously the caliper is sticking and dragging - letting the inner pad freely retract while holding the outer against the rotor.

Have 119,8xx miles on the truck and was still on the original pads and rotors, front and rear. Right rear now has new pads on and I cleaned up and greased the caliper slides. Hopefully that will take care of the wear issue.

The cheap (Raybestos?) pads I got from Autozone for a quick fix came with new shims/brackets - which don't fit the caliper. Pads look to be a perfect match though. I'll be probably be re-doing it all with the OEM pads and new rotors later so no worries.

Thanks for the heads-up. My 2003 has 108,xxx and also has the original brakes/rotors. I'll check mine out.

Get some hi temp caliper grease and grease up the guide pins good. Craig
