Rear bearing on dually help!!
The inner wheel bearing on the rear end of my 2001 dually went bad. Unfortunately it got so hot it welded the bearing right to the "spindle"??? Not sure if this is the right name for the part but it is the part that bolts to the axel housing. I managed to cut most of the bearing off but I damaged the housing where the bearing sits. I tried to get the "spindle" from dodge but the only sell the entire rear end housing for 2K plus!! Does anyone know if this is correct? Can't believe you have to buy the entire housing to replace one part. If true is my only other option the junk yard?

I cut all of the bearing off and sand and file everything as smooth as possible. Try not to take too much of the base metal down. I'd TIG weld up the really bad spots and regrind them. Get a bearing to re-establish the fit. You can dent the surface with a center punch but it will only tighten it up for a while on a truck. You may have to lock-tite the bearing on to prevent it from spinning again. I've done this on the race cars before and it has held up. Most of them are slip fit and depend on a jam nut for preload however.

I cut the bearing off with a torch. I'm left with a thin layer of metal from the inner most part of the bearing. I did damage a small part of the spindle with the torch but thats about it. Would you suggest grinding/sanding the thin skin of the bearing off and create a uniform surface and fit the bearing as necessary?
Thanks for the help

OK, Do not know where you are located..but most big towns have a mobil shop that specialize in that repair...Start with the big trk shops (semi) and ask.
No use in making that more painful then needed

Not sure how hot it got but to seize the bearing the way it did I'm sure it was pretty warm.
Using a straight edge and measuring it appears to be right on.
BTW the truck is in Lincoln NE right now on I-80 but not many truck stops right here.

Well...like said you can get a file to it and work it dwn keep measuring it.If it is gouged below couture you can add a spot of weld and refile...I think if it was minor ....maybe spot of JB weld...In the end you will whip it .
