Ummmmm, what is the correct way to change the fuel filter in the stock canister housing. This is on a 07, 5.9. I change it every oil change. But, are you suppose to completely drain the fuel out of the canister, or just pull it out with the canister full, and drop in a new one.

Drain it. Slip a piece of heater hose over the short drain hose in place to extend it and drain it into your oil drain pan with the oil.

Drop the new filter into the empty housing, screw the lid on, and turn the key on but do not crank the motor. Listen for the fuel pump running in the tank. After a few it will stop. Cycle the key off and back on and and let the pump run again. After 3 cycles mine starts just like normal and goes right to a smooth idle.

Pull the heater hose off check for leaks and done.

I do not disrupt anything in the filter housing by wiping it down. What drains out is sufficient.

I use a suction gun much faster then draining and it sucks all the crudd that maybe on the bottom of filter housing. It also works good if you overfill your trans a little bit, need to buy extra long clear hose at Home Depot or hardware store.

Yup, like the guys said, drain it. When you do, be on flat land or else it won't all drain out. Ask me how I know

I always stick the drain tube in a clean 20 oz bottle set on top the axle. Then I can let the bottle sit for a few days and see if there was any water to settle out in there. Then when I'm done I'll dump the fuel either back in the tank or in my torpedo heater. On a side note, I've yet to find any water to come out of there in 62k miles.

so i will add to this dumb question, what do you gain by draining it.

i have never seen anyone do it before...and no one has told me.

You reduce the chance of debris getting past the filter when you install the filter. With no fuel in the housing, the debris will be at the bottom (hopefully) and it wont slip past the filters o ring to tube seal.
