Really cold start problem
I put a post in help also but i am home now and just wanted some info.
It was about 0 or less last night and I had to move the truck. It was not plugged in and it took 3 tries to crank it. When it did start it sounded like death, was shaking real bad, and was smoking real real bad. I plugged it in over night and it started fine and I had haardly any smoke (mostly just smoke because it was really cold)but I had an engine light and 2 codes. they were p0514 and p0341. I found what they were, the one that concerend me was the 341.
Well anyway on the way home I stopped to fill up and when I restarted the engine light cleared but the codes are still there. Will these codes go away r do I have to take it in to have them cleared. That and why wsa the truck so hard to start. I know it will be harder when it is cold but there are guys on here that say they can start theirs when it is -20 out, my truck just did not want to start.
Also wold you think that it might have caused any problems to the truck

I actually had a bit of the same problem. But mine was my fault. It was -1 this morning when i went to leave according to the overhead . But my deal was i didnt let it cycle in the grid warmer long enough and started it. She started but she didnt like it haha. I never gave it a seconds thought the 99 starts right up. Let it cycle a second or two ( enough time to put the lunch in the passenger seat and put he coffee in the cup holder and off id go. This one likes to be a lil warmer i guess haha Time to go buy a plug

Does any one have any imput as to what the 0341 code indicates, I know it is camshaft pos sensor performance/rationality, but what does tha mean in english
Also I just do not understand why it was so hard to start. Like I said it took 3 tries to crank and even then I had to hold the key for a while (relatively speaking). I know Diesels will be tough in the cold but I keep reading on here about how others will 'fire right up'.

What do you have in it for fuel? Where you buy have they started mixing for the cold weather or do you have straight #2 in it. Straight #2 is going to be a little stiff at 0

i just posted on another thread about this. had to start mine at -26F this morning, not plugged in because i was not planning on going anywhere. it did much the same as yours. my 99 would start and run easily under the same conditions and still does. looks like i can't count on this one to do the same. That means I'll have to park it out of the way all the time.

My only guess is a losser engine, 04 with 5500mi and the 99 with 159000, Well wait and see. One thing ive noticed is when its really cold and istart it it wont let me use the throtle. It just sits there for a few minutes

It's -27C out tonite. I'm plugged in with the 2 battery blankets and the block heater. I noticed when it's plugged in this way the power to the glow plugs is like a summer day. I think the battery blankets make a huge difference. I'm going to use the magnetic pan heaters on the oil and trans pan when she really starts dropping in January. just to see how that works out. I use Red D Arc welders on the site at work for 10 years now and those Kubota diesels just take a beating winter and summer and they're all still out there working, never plugged in, often started with ether, it's just brutal what they do to them. Kubota diesels really take alot of abuse.
