R & R Crank Position Sensor

Friday on the way to work the check engine light came on. I thought maybe I rushed the Wait to Start check as I was in a hurry. I have lit the CLE light before doing this.

Anyway I thought I'd scan it at work but that came and went beside the CLE lite went out when I started the truck to go home Friday night. I thought I'd scan it in the morning before I go on the streetrod run.

ggrrr. I hooked up the trailer and pulled the rig out so I could unload the hotrod. I got it out and parked in the middle of our desert sand lot and went to back the truck and trailer back into it's spot and the truck won't start. There I am blocking one entry to the parking lot and blocking 7 trailers in besides.

So I get the Smarty box out and scan the codes ...sure enough P 336 CPS failure. 3rd time in a year and a half.

Fortunately the streetrod is ready to travel so I hit the road to the auto parts store. 4 stores and 80 miles later I connect on a CPS.

Here is the installation proceedure for a 99 3500 dually 5 spd.
1. block the truck rear wheels and trailer wheels front and rear with 4x4 blocks.
2. Jack the front of the truck up enough so you can slither under the step tubes.
3. place 2 heavy jack stands under the front sway bar brackets.
4. lower jack a little leave tension on the jack for extra saftey.
5. Get tools out.
3/8 std ratchet or long flop head
6 in wobble extension
8 mm socket
10 mm 12 point socket
17 mm socket
medium flat screw driver
1/2" comb wrench ( or what fits neg battery post)
small tool tray
large piece of cardboard to crawl on or creeper if on pavement.
6. disconnect both battery neg cables. they were the easiest here using the 1/2 comb wrench
7. lay cardboard down under driver door
8. take tools and new CPS and crawl under the truck.
9. remove the small wire on the starter with the ratchet and 8 mm socket
10. remove positive cable connecton on starter with 17 mm socket and ratchet. Push cable out of the way
11. loosen all 3 bolts on the starter with the 10mm 12 pt socket, wobble extention and ratchet.
12 remove the top starter bolt first
13. support starter with one hand and remove the other 2 starter bolts.
14. lower starter and set aside
15. remove the bolt on the CPS with the 10mm 12 pt socket and ratchet
16. carefully twist the CPS side to side so it breaks loose. be very careful not to break it off. It's just plastic
17. Use the screw driver to help remove the electrical plug on the CPS.
18. install the new CPS to the electrical plug.
19. put a little oil from the CPS hole on the CPS oring so it doesn't stick and goes in the hole easier.
20. install the CPS and tighten the bolt.
21. support the starter and install one or 2 of the lower bolts.
22. install the upper bolt and tighten
23. tighten the lower 2 starter bolts
24 install the small starter wire
25. install the large starter wire.
26. crawl out and install the 2 neg battery terminals. Close hood your done under here. Brush sand and dirt off jeans.
27. lift truck with jack and remove stands
28. lower truck and go pick up wheel blocks so you done run over them.
29 start truck and smile for a job well done.

make sure that the sensor is not damaged in any way , if it is the tone ring on the crank might be coming off

Sorry I forgot that. I do check them. So far I haven't seen one damaged. Apparently they fail electrically.

As a side note is there a way to check them electrically.???

It's really not worth the effort to just check one except if you are in the middle of nowhere and a simple test and corrective action could get you back on the road.
