Quiet my 5" exhaust? Suggestions? Opinions?
I am running a 4" downpipe leading into 5" pipe after my transfer case. There is approx 4 feet of straight 5" then a Aeroturbine 5050 and up and over the rear axle. The actual noise coming out the tailpipe does not seem so bad; it's the drone or resonation I seem to be getting from under the cab or bed.
I have a list of possible solutions. Give me an opinion or suggestion.
1. Add a muffler before the Aeroturbine. I was thinking a Magnaflow.
2. Replace Aeroturbine with a Aeroturbine XL.
3. Move Aeroturbine forward 3 or 4 feet.
4. If the noise is coming from the taipipe section, maybe remove tailpipe and exit in front of rear tire. This would force me to move the Aeroturbine 3 feet forward and have much less pipe for noise to resonate.
5. Remove the Aeroturbine all together and get a high flowing 5" muffler.
Hopefully someone can chime in with experience on this.
I have good hearing and want to keep it that way. It's my listening I need to work on.

Don`t know if this is helpfull but, I just put a 5" in, it is a "Big Exhaust" brand for a 2nd gen. It had been sitting for several years and was being tossed into the dumpster so I figgered "if it`s free it`s for me". Quieter but deeper than the Source Auto 4" that was on there. I tried googling "big exhaust" but no luck (out of business?). At any rate I wanted to know who supplied the muffler because I`m super happy with it but no luck. It`s a straight thru design about 36" long but there are no markings, part #`s or anything like that on it, NO drone or anything like that. Maybe try the 2nd and 3rd gen boards as 5" stuff is much more common on those trucks.
duhhhhhh, I linked to this from my RSS feed, didnt SEE it ALREADY on the 2nd gen board.

One trick to use is to alter the mass of the exhaust by adding some metal. I did this by clamping some angle steel to the pipe in varying lengths. When the amount was right I welded it on. Adding the steel changed the resonant frequency of the pipe and it worked fine to remove the drone...in then end though I just added a resonator a friend gave me.

Spiral turbo specialties sells baffles that go in the end of the exhaust pipe. I am running them in all of my trucks. NO muffler and NO drone. I think they make them up to 6". Best thing I have found, and there tunable. Alot of street rodders use them because of lack of space.

Load hauler; Honestly, how quiet are they and how long are the ones you are using?
Looks like they can be made up to 10" diameter and 51" in length.
Thanks for the info.

The ones that I'm using are about4" x 12" long. I have a single in my 93 and 92. My 04 & 05 I split the exhaust just over the rear axle and are running one in either exhaust. I invite anyone who dose'nt believe me to either try them or come to Az and ride in one of my trucks with me. I did'nt believe them until I tried them. The so called peformance muffler that I was running was so loud in the cab you could'nt hear the Radio. I just drove home from Vegas yesterday in my wifes 05 and it is not alot louder that stock. They have to be installed like the directions say or you will get the same thing, drone in the cab. I have said it before, this is just advice on a product that worked for me. Use it or not, It dose not matter............

Try undoing the front exhaust hanger that bolts to the bell housing, or the one that bolts to the trans mount. I have found that if the hanger is welded to the exhuast it may not fit quite rite and cuase some resonance or tear a hole in the pipe.

I used to have an '04 QC 305/555. I straight piped it with an AeroTurbine and it worked great. The trick with AeroTurbines is to put them as far forward as possible. Ideally right at the bottom of the downpipe where you go to straight pipe is best according to what was on their website. I had no issues with drone and it sounded really good. The AeroTurbine is a quality piece. Keep it if you can.

Load Hauler; not doubting you. Just trying to spend money in the right place.
RowJ; That article sounds like a very similar concept as Load Haulers.
12valve; I have not met my "single turbo fuel only goals" yet.
EMD; I might try that first. Wish I had a 5050XL instead.
Thanks guys!
