From my own experience, I could only say that it is about 1/5 or 1/6 or so of your total fuel tank capacity is left. I could be wrong. See what others have to say.

wow... thats interesting. Lets just say that there is 9 gallons for everybody when the light goes on.

9 X 15 = 135 miles.
9 X 20 = 180 miles.

Thats allot of miles left on a tank pegged on empty.

I didnt need to hear this!

Running on empty is not good for a diesel engine. Sloshing fuel picks up more air, and condensation can add water to the fuel system. Nothing good can be gained by running empty.

Filler up boys & girls.

I think the wide safety margin was set because the average consumer would likely not be able to bleed the system without getting a tow, unlike most fuel-injected vehicles from the same era that would self bleed on a coulple key-on, key-off cycles.

edit: plus what Geico said. These fuel systems are NOT cheap and do NOT tolerate filth like a gasser will.

The only time my low fuel light came on I got 29 gallons in the tank. I never want to see that light again.

Not to mention fuel cools and lubes the pump, no fuel = no lube, not good. I ran out gas one time and contrary to mosts experiance it started on third try, i tried for 15 or so seconds and sat for a minute, and third it poped right off. But it wont ever happen again if i can stop it.

A VE-pumped 6bt is extremely bleed-friendly. Took me 4 times as long to bleed a 3 cylinder Yanmar diesel in a John Deere that ran dry than it did to fire my truck with a fresh IP and dry high pressure lines...
