Quick Oil Filter question...

I changed my oil again a few days ago. Had the truck since new and its approaching 100,000 miles. Getting the camera ready for the milestone. LOL I drove it home from town, and went up on my ramps to level it out to drain all the way. I let it set and cool for about 15-20 minutes after turning it off.

For the FIRST TIME ever, when I took the filter off it was only about 1/3 full with oil. I usually drain it a little quicker after running it but got busy and it cooled for about 15-20 minutes. Is there a valve or something in there that would keep the oil filter from being full? Thanks!

I don't know the exact answer to your question but I do know the longer I wait to cool off the less a mess I have when I drop the filter. It's never been only 1/3 full though... maybe 2/3 full. Anything is better than hot black oil slicking down your arm on its way to dripping directly into your ear. (don't laugh as it's happened to me).

Yep THis is probably the longest I had waited so it makes total sense! And I got a complete drain out of it!

Yea Teacher,,,
Two weeks ago I thought I was making oil because the level was over full when I changed it. I just knew I had an injector leaking! I changed the oil yesterday to take an oil sample to the truck shop and noticed the same thing,, 1/3 of the filter was full. So the sample came back negative and now I have the same question as you. I'm going to change the filter again to a Wix and check to see if Fleetguard has some bad filters. In the mean time I'm going to check and make sure if filters are supposed to have anti drainback valves in them. Let me know if you figure something out.. or if this is normal.
Cause 3 gallons of oil shows overfull right now on a cold engine.
Thanks,
Andy

Its normal for the filters to not be full of oil sometimes when you pull it. I can't remember the last couple times if they were full or not or how long I let the truck sit from a warm up. I do remember the filter being only about half full the first time I changed it. That surprised me.

Capacity is 12qts on these trucks. If you're getting all 12out, put all 12 back in. I have before questioned the fill level on my dipstick vs how much oil I put in. I decided to go with 12qts on the money instead of reading off the dipstick.

Yeah, I've let it cool between the drain and the filter pull... it is not full most of the time. Don't sweat it. Easier that way

Cool, I never thought it was a problem just weird. LOL When I put 3 gallons exactly in my truck it reads about 1/8th of an inch OVER FULL on the dip stick. But it was like this the day it was brand new and every time after that so I figured it was just normal for my truck.

Normal for it to partially drain back, no worries. I always prefill the oil filters.
