Questions On Ram Air III !!!
I am getting ready to replace the stock airbox in my 04.5 3500. I have been looking at the scotty ram air III system and was wondering what everyone thought of the system ??? Also will this filter as well as the pro-guard 7 system ??? I have been pricing the two systems and the scotty ram air III is about a hundred bucks cheaper than the AFE proguard 7 sytem. What are your opinions ???
thanks,
matt

I've had mine on my truck for about 8,000 miles and I love it. The truck responds a lot better with less turbo lag. As far as mileage goes I've gained about a 1/2 mpg. The UNI filter keeps things clean. I was a little worried the other day when I took a look at it. It was nasty on the outside, but when I disconnected it and wiped down the intake tube with a white cloth, no dirt on the inside. I'd highly recommend getting it.

I have the old style filter in mine. Which model Uni do I need to order and where to get it from?
I'm very pleased with the Scotty III design, fit and finish. There was always a lingering doubt about the filtering ability of the original element though. I presume the Uni filter will be more labor intensive (frequency wise) given my experience with motorcycle filters.

Another feature of the two stage foam on the UNI is its real easy to slip the outer layer off and clean it. Feedback from folks running the UNI is that they are cleaning the outer layer only on the first clean [10K-15K miles] and then doing both on the next round.
Its like having a prefilter and main filter in one. The design turned out real nice.
Thanks for all the positive comments!

We have the Scotty RA-III on the 2004 truck in our shop and it works very well at increasing air flow and stopping the dirt. One note to everyone using the Scotty with the 2-stage foam filter. These filters come pre-oiled, but the oil tends to all end up on one end of the filter before they are installed leaving part of the filter unoiled. We highly recommend that you oil the filter properly and squeeze out the excess before installation.

I looked at the purchase in the sense of:
1) $ versus other brands
2) clearance underhood for when I was going to install an aftermarket turbo because for some of the other aftermarket filter boxes you would have to trim the bottom of the box or purchase a modified airbox.
3) UNI versus other filtering media
In regards to 1) it's already been answered in a previous post.
In regards to 2), the RA3 works with an aftermarket turbo without any trimming. The only thing with the RA3 is that its inlet points slightly upwards so if you did a custom "home-made" air intake with rigid 90-degree rubber elbows like I did, then it's a bit of a struggle to get the RA3 inlet to fit (less of a struggle with the HTB2 turbo since you can push the hose onto the turbo inlet farther to gain clearance). With the stock inlet tubing with the flexible elbows it's a non-issue. If I could find a 100 or 110 degree 4" rubber elbow that would be perfect.
In regards to 3) the UNI versus other filtering media has been discussed extensively elsewhere before so in the end you just have to go with what you feel is right. I was actually ready to buy a RA3 when they still had the AFE filter option. Then, when Scotty switched to the UNI it was really a no-brainer to me IN MY OPINION.
All-in-all, a good product for a good price with good customer service!
