Question about the vp44
O.K. here it is, but let me give you some background first. 3 or 4 weeks ago I had the gooseneck on and was pulling the tractors home from the hay field, and I thought it dead pedaled once or twice but was barely noticable. Now keep in mind it was about 104 in the shade that day and I was in a hurry to get home so I was working the truck fairly hard. Now after that I read the codes and had the dreaded P0216 code. Since then the truck has drove just fine and as of last night has not threw anymore codes. Which gets me to my question. I have an elk hunt coming up in the middle of September, which will be a 3000 mile round trip. Do I change the LP and head out or do I change the LP and IP? Keep in mind I have already threw my extra money at the elk hunt so funds are alittle short right now. What would you do?

That's a tough question. When mine did it I was going to Albany, Ga to get a tractor and it did it several times on the way down but would come back. It also did it on the way home but stopped after Atlanta. The interstate was like a washboard but after Atlanta it got better.
At first mine would come back. On the way home it would not come back, so I cycled the key off, then on leaving it in gear and my pedal would come back. I drove almost 600 miles like that and the fuel pressure was always above 7psi. I got the LP replaced at the dealer and a day later was back with the death code and dead pedal.....they did the IP the second time around.
You have 3000 miles to go and I have heard of some IP's just laying down completely, which means you could be middle of nowhere when it turds out on you. Then it ruins your elk hunt, no truck and your waiting at little town somewhere for the parts paying for a hotel room in someplace you'd rather not be. Then little town mechanic shoots a lift pump on it, as per dodge and it craps out 50 miles down the road because the IP is shot.
A good Cummins dealer should be able to test your IP. We have a place here in town that is certified on the VP44 and they can bench test/flow test them and replace one thing, the IP and not the LP unless it actually needs it.
It's your call, maybe it will, maybe it won't but I'd be nervous as a long tail cat in a rockin chair factory.
Good luck on your hunt at least!

your 02 with 79k is still (technically by wording) under warranty. Search long and hard on this forum. It's a fight but Chrystel will "help" the local dealer and pickup the cost minus $200 diag fee, I had mine done with only the diag fee and didn't have to wait for a check. But the 216 code does mean it's going to go at any time, it could go tomorrow or next year.

Good luck and search my story in the General Diesel area, see sig for date.

Changing the filter without knowing the FP is a risky job if your throwing a 216 code. Do at your own risk. More often than not the VP dies as the LP was already dead causing the VP to suck the fuel instead of push as it was designed. This is why everyone recommends a FP gauge or pressure light for a 2nd gen Cummins. If the lp is dead, breaking the seal to change the filter, the lp can't fill the bowl and the IP can't suck/push the fuel so it won't start.

Since you may still be in warranty, I would call a reputable dealer. They should do it for $200, or so. Call Chrysler, if they give you a bad time.
Next, get the FP gauge. Geno's on this site is a good place to look.I would also keep a spare lift pump in the truck.
SOP for Gen 2's.
You do not want to be in BFE and have the truck go dead, a very bad movie.
