I have a 1999 dodge quad cab 4x4 24 valve cummins i replaced the fuel system lift pump. dodge no longer sells the stock engine mounted lift pump they sell an in tank convertion kit ( part #5175538AA ) so installed it.
now the fuel pressure is 8 psi at idle so i called dodge they said to test this
in tank system they flow test it and disregard pressure test and didn't know the specifications for testing it.i found a tech tip from dodge use 2005 test procedure. hope some one can help thanks

You should have done some research before installing that in-tank pump, they're causing problems for everyone who has done the upgrade. Do yourself a favor and get rid of it. You can get a stock Carter or Delphi from Cummins or Napa.

What "problems" have they caused Piperca? While I will agree the psi is less than what DC used to recommend, and I am leary of the lower psi, I personally haven't run into a truck with a prob relating to the in tank lift pump.

Maybe I should rephrase that statement. I too was referring to the fuel pressure being less than stellar. I have heard nothing but complaints on this and other websites. True, I don't have any personal experience, but from what has been posted, guys are able to pull them down to 0 psi very easily ... I would consider this to be a problem, wouldn't you?

Recently someone posted that the in-tank pump + comp = bad VP (or something to that effect). The person who posted was unaware that he had no fuel pressure when he was heavy on the pedal ... that sounds like a problem. That problem cost him his VP.

Steveooo, do a search and read what others are saying about their experience with the in-tank pumps.

I have had the intank lift pump for over 15k mi. I'm not happy with it, but I also installed the Vulcan big line kit.
At first my truck (with mild mods) could pull the fuel pressure down to 2psi at WOT. Now with out the restrictive banjo bolts, I can only pull it down to 7psi at WOT at Idle I have 9.5 psi per my gauge. "Note" this is pulling my 13,500 lb 5th wheel,at 70 mph with 20 lbs boost . Since installing the Vulcan kit, I feel a lot better about the in tank pump. Just my $.02. time will tell. If it should fail on me , I plan to reinstall a standard tank pick up unit( the one that came out at 88k.) and get a FASS. "Ironbutt"
