A question about Fuel system

Hi guys. I've done a million searches, and can't seem to find the answer. Well, I found one answer but I think it's wrong.
My lift pump is on its last leg, so I ordered a Holley, some braided hose, and various AN fittings from Summit. I'm making my own relocation kit and upgrading the plumbing from the filter housing to VP while I'm at it.
Anyway, I read on here that the factory fuel line, the hard line by the tank, is 5/16 tube, but it sure as hell looks a lot bigger. There is a line there that looks like its 5/16, but I'm pretty certain that's the return line and the feed line looks to be 3/8. What I'm trying to accomplish is using an adapter to convert the hard tube to a male -6an fitting, rather than just clamp the braided line onto the hard line. I ordered a 5/16 to -6an adapter but it's obviously far too small. What size should I use?
Thanks
Dave

Just curious, how are you planning to install the adaptor on to the steel tubing - compression or flare?

If you can form a bubble flare on the steel tube then you can clamp the rubber hose directly on to the steel tube.

Its a compression style fitting that adapts hard tubing to AN. I know there's not much pressure there and a couple hose clamps will do the trick; I'm just trying to avoid that for a clean looking install and my own peace of mind.

The more I think about it, I'm guessing the factory line is 5/16 ID. My adapter is for 5/16 OD. Anyone know what the OD of the fuel line is?

the 5/16 line has a plastic covering on it, probably to reduce chances of wearing a hole in it... it makes it look bigger

It was starting to get dark when I was under there last night (had a flashlight though), but it didn't look like a plastic cover to me. I could easily be mistaken though, like I said it was starting to get dark. It definitely looked like a bare steel line. I will look again and report my findings.

A couple of hose clamps on the supply line to the pump works just fine, there's no pressure on the supply line, you just have to make sure it doesn't suck air. I've had mine like that for about 5 yrs with no trouble at all.

I just got done installing my pusher pump and eliminating the block mounted factory lift pump. I used a Holley pump and -6AN lines from the tank, through the pump, up to the filter canister, and to the VP44. I even modified a pressure adapter fitting with a schrader valve so I can still check my fuel pressure. I'm getting about 18psi at idle, so I'm happy with that. The hose on my pressure gauge isn't long enough to check fp at WOT.

Oh and by the way, the factory fuel feed line is most assuredly NOT 5/16 OD. It's 3/8OD. I'm a little miffed about having to resort to ugly, less than reliable hose clamps when the rest of the system is pretty AN fittings and stainless line, but oh well. I'll have to order the 3/8 tube to -6AN adapter and clean it up.
