Question on Cat.
Ive been reading on different post about the cats on dodge trucks and Im a little confused. I was reading in one of my mags and they was upgrading the exhaust on a '04 dodge. They called it a Diesel Particulate Filter. Is this the same thing as a cat or something completely different? Im wanting to pull the one off of my '04 Dodge truck and wanting to make sure of what it is before I pull it. And I live in Virginia so I dont know if it would be ilegal or not to remove it. Any suggestions would help.

There is no cat on an 04, but there is on an 04.5. (build date after jan 04)
To my knowledge, there were not DPF's on Dodges until 07.5 with the 6.7L.
The DPF is completely different than a cat.
There is a resonator that looks like it could be a cat on an 04.
It is illeagal to remove a cat... we don't talk about that here on the DTR. However, feel free to discuss other exhaust mods.
Do you have an 04 or 04.5?
PM me if you have any questions about the cat's and 04.5's...
Hope this helps.

I have a '04.5 with the 600 cummins in it. Looking at the pics in the magazine i was reading it looks exactly the same as on the truck they was working on and they called it a particulate filter. I dont know if thats the same as a Cat or not. Maybe it was a typo In the magazine it says they are working on a '04 Dodge. If you all get it Off Road Magazine its in the July 2008 on Pg. 46.

agreed- when i spoke to a friend of a friend at cummins, he said that removing the cat (for offroad purposes only) would lower backpressure, therefore lower egt's, and was a good move if you were planning on keeping the truck for a while (but don't forget to re-install it, if you'll be driving on public roads ).

I have a 4" straight through muff with the CAT still in on mine. I only see 1200* max pulling 10k with Smarty + Quad. So, with smog checks starting for diesels in 2010 here in Cali, I'll just leave it there.

Say it ain't so!! This is the first that I've heard about smogging diesel's. Is there more info about this anywhere. I know that there is soon to be some kind of regulation on commercial/ag guys, but I've heard nothing about private owners.

I took my wife's car to the test-only guy last week and asked him about smogging diesels. He said that Cali's plan is 2010, but that it would likely get pushed back one or more years because of the bureaucratic mess and smog shops will not have the equipment to test diesels by then. So, it's a wait and see for now.

There's info out there, DMV site maybe. Lots of stuff about smogging and retro-fitting smog equipment on all vehicles back to a certain date of MFG.
