Quad X2 45HP vs. 65HP setting for towing

I installed a Quad X2 standard and Commander and will be towing a 10K fifth wheel soon. Would it be better to start on the 65HP setting, and if EGT's get too high, lower it to 45HP? Or start on the 45, and if it starts kicking out of OD, bump it to 65? I just wondering how to determine which setting is better. Would one setting give better MPGs?

I currently have my Commander set to defuel at 1350º and warn for coolant at 215º and tranny at 220º. Anything else I should be watching when towing?

Run it on level 2. That auto tranny won't like you very much on the level 3 towing.

I run my X2 on the 45 hp setting empty and pulling or 5th wheel. On my truck I notice very little difference in power between the 45 and 65 hp setting but do get better mileage on the 45 hp setting. I set the Commander at 1350* defuel for EGT when towing but have yet to have it defuel. I have run the 65 hp setting while pulling the trailer but that was on a trip through West Texas on I10 that is long and flat. Anything with hills I would not run the 65 hp setting pulling the trailer. Our trailer weighs 12k loaded.

I had my xzt on the 65hp for a bit, had the commander set to back down at 1350*. It would run in to the back down on almost every long hard pull up a hill. Got annoying and bumped it up a bit. Stock the truck would hit 1350.

I say run it on the 65hp and keep an eye on it, you could always back down. Or just bump it up, personal preferance.

I also have the X2 and have uploaded the mileage tune to it. Per Jeremay at Quad should be the same as the older XZT box which was designed for towing and only had the 65hp setting. I have found that the newer 3rd generations do run hotter under load. Frequently I can hit 1400 degrees for a brief period towing even with the jumper on the with the Quad box disconnected I can do 1400 for short spurts. Have tried towing with the mileage setting and not much difference from without any box. Finally have used the 65hp setting, watch the EGT's and keep on towing.
