Quad cab speaker boxes

Ive decided to go ahead and get some real bass in this thing. I know that i want the under rear seat set-up. Any suggestions on which ones hit hard? Speaker type, amp type, box type (wood or molded). If the wood is just as good then ill go with it for $$ savings. I want a decent set up with hard hitting bass as my priority. Not realy low bass but just that good punch for rock. Any ideas? TIA -Jake
PS: Ive still got the stock radio, i dont realy want a new one cause its got the CD and Tape. This wont realy hamper the perforamce will it?

I cant say I know enough to advise you on what to get, but I can say that I was in your exact position this time last year.

You can check my sig for what I have now. Almost all the info I got about stereos was from the different guys on here, mainly Sean, (txredneck).....so Im sure someone will help you out.

I will advise you on one point however. There seem to be only 2 options on custom made boxes for quad cab trucks.

The first is to run 2 10" subs and put them in a JL Audio stealthbox

The second is to run a single 12" in a box under the front console.

You can build a custom box for 2 12" like this one

Hope that little bit helps, and Im sure some of the stereo guys will chime in as well

I have an MTX Thunderform under my rear seat. It uses two 10's, is downward firing and it has nice tight bass. I power it with a JL Audio 500/1 monoblock amp also.
Best thing you could do is get a new deck- the stock ones are junk.

Also- if your on a budget. Buy an Alpine XM ready head unit- they have more wattage than your stock system and will make your stock speakers sound pretty good. You could then add an amp and sub at a later date.

I just got through with my final exams, so I'm finally getting to tackle this same project pretty soon as well. I'm going to go with the under the seat box for the 2 12s as shown above. If you look in the member's photos section here, look at the picks for BigBlue. He built this same box. I talked to him in the past and he seems to really like it.

If you take any advise from me, please let it be this: do youself a favor and get an aftermarket head unit. I have the "premium" set up in my 01 right now, and it's not all it's cracked up to be. Once you've heard a nice radio (aftermarket head unit, speakers, and a nice sounding 12" or two) you'll never go back. I put in an amp and 2 12s for my girlfriend's brother. All he wanted was bass. Bass, bass, bass, that's all he talked about. So off he went, got a massive amp and 2 really nice 12s. Everythig else was factory, and it sounded like garbage. He recently purchased a new head unit and all 4 speakers and he said he felt stupid for not doing it a long time ago.

Anyway, there are a few options out there, however I'm going to go with the custom setup made out of MDF. It's a whole lot cheaper, as well as you get to brag about having built it yourself.

Good luck with your decision.

I don’t know how cool you want to be but if you wanted you could take out the back seat and put 2 15's and have the box be the seat. i would have to agree with getting a new head unit and new high speakers it will sound way different. Remember that its not how many amps you have its how much surface area you have in speakers. i have a 95 gmc Sonoma with the 15's and all the stuff and it kicks. if i had to pick a brand i would pick kicker, eclipse and infinity those are some good name brands. Wood works just fine for what you want to do. If I were you I would use kicker low speakers, eclipse amp and head unit, and infinity high speakers. My last word of advise make a plan where to stop, I did not do this and $10,000 later I’m still not done, almost but not yet. There is never a limit as to how clear you can get your system. Good luck, have fun let me know if you have any more questions.

That box is total crap I wouldn't use that on a bet You can easily fit a set of JL 12W3's under the rear seat they are DVC (dual voice coil) subs and are much deeper then regular coil subs. I run 2 12 DVC subs easily under my rear seat if you know where to put em and how to make the box they will fit. Lots of guys say they won't fit with the seat in the stock location etc etc mine fit no problem.

I also have the center seat JL stealth box up front so I have 3 JL 12W3's.

The best place for your amps bar none is the back wall of your truck what better place is there? If you live somewhere that gets a real winter when it snows and you have the amps under your seats all the water from your boots etc gets into them and the salt not good.

The best way to go about the rear wall is to get a piece of MDF and cut it to fit I used 1/2" you may also want to dynamat or brownbread the rear wall for sound proofing and it cuts some exhaust noize down.

So take your wall and prep it how you want then get some of that super high strength caulking from where ever and apply it to both the wall and the MDF then set it in place and get some pieces of wood to prop it up tight to the back you want a good seal here.

Now once dried you have the perfect amp rack. Screw your amps to the wall make sure the screws aren't to long and go through the truck! Install the seat and everything disappears!

This is also good beacause no thief is gonna remove your rear seat to get to your amps plus they are all screwed on most guys go for the cheapo installs where the amps are just laying there.

Hope this helps.

Honestly if I didn't compete for audio I would only run 2 10's under the rear seat or 8's really not much need for more unless you want to bother your neighbours when you come home at 1am with the tunes cranked!

If you looking for brands you can't go wrong with JL/Alpine/pioneer. Those are my top choices and after being in the audio biz for a while they are top quality and performance.

BTW when you go get your stuff pick a brand and stay with it other then the head unit if your going to use jl speakers use JL subs or if your gonna use alpine use all alpine nothing is more tackey then a set of alpine speakers in your front doors infinity in your rear doors eclipse subs with a jvc amp it just looks terrible.

q-logic box

THis is what I have. Its a Q-Logic with 1-12" sub. It hits hard, and tight. It is great for rock, and country. But it doesnt hit as hard as a bandpass on the deeper notes. Also has 2 cup holders in the top that add 5 hp....lol.

1-12" Polk DX (small enclosure sub)
RF Punch 120a (wired mono)
Eclispe head unit

Replace your head unit. Its not hard, and you can get a good one for around 200.

I bought all my stuff from crutchfield. (except the head unit). Sometimes they have free shippings offers, so I waited till a day when they had it, and took advantage of it.

I'm running 2 10" JL W3's with a RF 800wt amp. I have a fiberglass downfire box, which point the subs towards the floor. This box makes a huge difference, trust me!!! I know people with the same setup I have, but in a regular box. They ask me what did I do to make mine sound louder/cleaner/ bass'ier/ deeper and so on. All I told them that the only difference was my box. Just pm BigBlue, he'll back me up on this. I'm gonna use nothing but downfire boxes for the rest of my time driving.

Keep on keeping on,
Hunter

I love the box I built. It hits hard, tight, sounds awesome. I've got 2 audiobahn 12's right now with a Audiobahn amp, polk components in the door (soon to be changed to Alpine Type R's or Audiobahn components) powered by an alpine amp, pioneer 2 ways in the rear (those to, will soon be replaced with something different), and an Alpine headunit. My system may not sound as good as some, but it works for me. It is not only loud, but sounds great. DD4X4 10's hit really hard. I've never heard a 10 hit as hard as those. If I can figure out how, I might build my own downfire box for these 12's. They aren't all that deep (I think 6") and I would love to stuff people in the back again. With the back seat rasied up as it is, it's only good for really storing junk. You can fit 1, maybe 2 people (they have to be midgets for 2) back there. I'm also thinking bout moving my amp. Although it looks so big and shiny and cool screwed to the front of the box.

You have to upgrade the head unit and other speakers. It won't sound right if you don't. I've got a buddy of mine who did the same thing as I PASS GAS's buddy did and it sounded horrible (2 lightning audio 15's). All you could hear was BOOM BOOM BOOM. No music at all. I highly recommend Alpine head units and if you can find them, Alpine type R or Focal Components. All powered by a nice, big amp.

Ive had a system before put in myself and all that, all it was were 3 10s in the back of my sonoma with a 600w bridged and a 200w head. Sounded great in my opinion, so as you can see it dont take much to please me. 3 mtx 5000s, 1500w total, kenwood 600w amp, sony head 200w. Im not going with sony anymore. Since you guys know your stuff, can i get the same out of a down fire twin 10 set-up as i would of a my previous set-up, if i did it right? I guess some of you have heard the tri box with the 10's? If it set it up correctly like matching subs to the amp or more powerfull subs or matching them to the correct box. You know all that little stuff that really makes a difference that i dont have any idea about. All i know is watts. Thasit. Ohms??? D-class?

use the jl stealth with two 10's. i tried two custom boxs, an mtx thunderform and one i built myself. the stealth is better than any of them by far. it fits and matches the interior perfect. i listen to all kinds of music from rock to barney with the kids. it works great with all kinds.i have a 250x2 rockford fosgate amp. with bass control **** mounted in dash. and a new player is a must have.

Ok fellas, just bought and installed a Alpine CD player! Circuit City did the install and i was out in 20 mins. Its a 50x4, 4 pre-outs,XM ready, all the other normal stuff. So, im that much closer. Now, im not sure if i should go with a stealth box or down fire box. Also what speakers will realy kick in either of the two?? Also any amp input would help. I plan on visiting a real audio dealer soon.
