Electrical connections should be checked first to rule out any loose wires. Then buy yourself a new probe. You say it's not reading right so I assume the stepper motor in the guage itself is still functioning.
By not reading right, what exactly is it doing.....a few hundred degrees off? If so more than likely the probe is bad. Is the guage reading at all? Any extra fueling? Clogged air filter?
Best guess is that the probe needs to be replaced.
