Purchase of Extended Warranty

How many 2003 Dodge truck owners have purchased the extended warranty. If not WHY?

If you did purchase, which plan did you purchase and why?

Appreciate your input in helping me make my decision.

Re:Purchase of Extended Warranty

I did not purchase an extended warranty for my current truck or my previous CTD. I have had extended warranties on other vehicles and never used them. The current extended warranties are grossly overpriced. Some are as much per month as my payment. With the DC 7/70 engine-drivetrain warranty and the Cummins 5/100 I can't justify the expense. This is just IMHO.

Re:Purchase of Extended Warranty

I didn't purchase one as I've found them to be too overpriced at the dealership. As an example, the dealer wanted $699 for GAP insurance for the truck loan but I had checked ahead of time and the bank I was using only charged $99...I opted to buy it at the bank. As for the extended warranty, they wanted $1799 but I know from my coworkers that you can get the same warranty for just under $1000 and usually Dodge sends you a mailer in a few months with an offer thus I'll wait. The $1799 was only to take the 7/70 powertrain warranty and upgrade it to a full, bumper to bumper 7/100...not worth it at that price and I told the dealer just that.

On my wife's vehicle, I told them I'd take the gap and extended warranty but at a reduced amount. They asked me how much and I was able to haggle them on the price and get a good deal based upon my research of what they should have cost but Dodge refused to haggle on my '03 CTD.

Re:Purchase of Extended Warranty

Be careful if you do purchase the extended warranty, to be certain you actually get it. I purchased it at the time I bought my truck and then several months later started receiving letters from DC on purchasing an extended warranty.

I assumed it was just there database kicking out the mailings until I received the fourth or fifth one. At this point I got out my contract and noted I did indeed purchase it and called DC.

They said I must be mistaken as the money was never sent to them. I called the dealer and after a couple of phone calls finally was told "They forgot to send in the money" : Yeah right, they sent me my money back and I ended up without the warranty.

I often wonder how many such warranties are "forgotten" as most people do not keep a vehicle long enough to use it. As always you have to be vigilant about every detail, don't believe anything until you have it in your hand.

Re:Purchase of Extended Warranty

I purchased a extended warranty. I bought a 7/70 extended care. I figured with the 7/70 powertrain and the 6/100 on the cummins. If I dont break something within that time its not going to happen.

I paid $825. Which was dealers cost plus $50. Which I do think they are intitled to. I also bought the oil change policy. $120 for 20 oil changes. The little footer said not to be used on Diesel trucks. Oops.. I have already gotten 3 oil changes so if they cancel me now. I am still ahead. It does not get any better than that.

I have been working in the extended warranty business for 5 years now. Just buy it. I know some of u have paid more than $825 for somethings and never used it. Its just a nice piece of mind. I know I do not like suprises. Like A/C comp for $600, or power window mtrs for $325.
Thoses little things add-up quick.

Re:Purchase of Extended Warranty

$1799 to increase your 3/36 bumper to bumper to 7/100 isn't that outrageous.. Thats 4 more years and 64K more miles that you're covered. If your a/c goes poop, or any number of things that aren't covered under the 'limited 7/70 powertrain' warranty, you might be glad you bought it. That amounts to $450 per extra year for warranty coverage. That may sound like a lot of repairs per year to justify it, but interior electronics like 6-disc changers and a/c compressors aren't cheap! I bought the extended warranty on my Tahoe, and had more $ in repairs than the cost of the warranty through the first 100k miles, so it proved a good investment. However, I also think its partially a matter of getting a truck built on friday afternoon at 330pm or one on wednesday morning.. :

Has anyone gotten an extended on their CTD and had it pay off?

Are there any dealers selling them cheaper? On kawasaki motorcycles and atv's for example, the Good times protection plan (kaw's ext warranty) is good no matter what dealer you buy it from or get service from. Therefore there are a few lowballers out there that are selling the warranties extremely cheap, cheaper than on ebay(yes you can buy atv warranties on ebay). They simply add the warranty status to your VIN. Now my local dealer's service guy has no clue that I didn't buy it from him I wondered if there are any known dodge dealers that do the same thing, and sell a bare bones price warranty?

Re:Purchase of Extended Warranty

I did not get it because I didn't care too much for the way my dealer tried to sell it to me. First he explained the whole warranty to me and them he told me the price of $1700.00. Yes, it's a lot of money but it is nice to have piece of mind knowing that if something breaks, it will get fixed. Where I got upset is when I asked if I could call him next week and add it if I decided to get it. He proceeded to tell me that I could do that but it would cost me a couple hundred extra dollars! > All this from a dealer who prides themselves on not pressuring their customers!!
I agree with most of the responses that the factory warranty is pretty good and I will risk it as I am sure that my truck is the one that Dodge made that will be trouble free for many years!!

Re:Purchase of Extended Warranty

I just don't see the reason why a guy would purchase an extended warranty from a dealer at the time of purchase rather than wait for the mailing from Chrysler. They're usually the same price and they don't pressure the heck out of you. Plus, you didn't lay that $1799 out at the very beginning while you're under full warranty. I've bought mine in the past during the 11th month of ownership and all was fine plus I didn't line the dealers pocket so he could earn interest on my money.

Basically these aren't warranties, they're insurance policies and a gamble on whether something major will go out between the 3yr/36 and the term of the extended warranty you purchase. My piece of mind is knowing that I purchased a truck with a solid engine and should something go in the 6th year like an a/c compressor, I'll pay for it just as I would if it went out in the 13th year of ownership....at least I'm paying for something that I actually receive and not some warm and fuzzy being offered by a dealership that I may never collect upon. To each their own but that's my opinion.....

Re:Purchase of Extended Warranty

I DID purchase the warranty. i didn`t feel preassured, but i got a 100,000 bumper to bumper warrenty. istead of saying what is covered, it lists a few things not covered.thius way, wheather its my power seets, or my radio, or my tranny, or my CTD, I`m coverred.
it did cost over $$1,500 , but i felt it was a small price for some peace of mind. this is my first diesel, and i wanted that security. i paid $5,500 more for the engine, a little more wasn`t gonna put me in the poor house. IMO

Re:Purchase of Extended Warranty

I bought the extended warranty for the same reasons others had, for the peace of mind. I am not a handy with vehicles and if something goes wrong I would have to pay some one to fix it. From experience and from listening to others it can get very costly. I would rather pay a set amount up front and not have to worry about paying for repairs later. If I do not end up using the extended warranty, well at least I did not have the worries of if something went wrong and I had to fix it myself. I can not put a price on not having that type of stress. I also got the extended warranty with my wife's Grand Cherokee, for the same reasons, peace of mind and that I do not have time or the knowledge to tinker with something when it breaks out of warranty.

Since they are such junk....
Think about the $1800, might be a great purchase....

Re:Purchase of Extended Warranty

I agree, I theink the DC Extended warrenty is a good deal and is nothing more insurance. Yes its true we are betting on somthing will go wrong and we don't want to pay for it. I purchased the extended warranty on every DC vehichle I have ever bought. True some of them I didn't get to take advantage of it and some I did. It is nice having a free rental car when they have to keep it over night though.
I say get it and of course make sure it is a DC warrenty and NOT some cheap fly by night other companies stuff that you have a 1-800 to get the repair approved prior to the work being done. This way you can the work done at any DC dealership because all they have to do is access the DC computer with your VIN and find out that you are covered. ;D ;D
Re:Purchase of Extended Warranty

A lot of great inputs here. Thanks for all the information. I don't remember being offered extended warranty at time of purchase but the current going price for my ZIP code for Max Care 7/100k is $2,140. Added Care for the same period, 7/100k is $1,545., both with $100 deductible. At the moment I am leaning toward the Added Care 7/100k to cover most important items. What am I missing?

Keep the information coming to help with the decision to purchase or not.

What are the differences between max and added care?
