I am new to the diesel world so i have another question, about Pumps, there is a injector pump ( that the really expencive one ) there is a primer pump (i think) not sure where that is... and the main point of this post is... what is the pump that is before the injector pump. and how do you know when you need to replace it, on a 1998 12 valve.

Do you mean the lift pump? I put one on my 95 last month and they are about $80 for a carter pump from a case tractor dealer(best deal you'll find). On mine I noticed it was leaking fuel because the pump had a crack in it and then it started to lose power and just fell on its face.

What should your fuel pressure be? if your is below that point I would say it is time to replace it I have also heard that a dirty fuel filter will starve your engine of fuel thus giving you low fuel pressure
