Exclamation pump timming/maybe worse

i had my pump redone and its suppossed to flow over 500cc of fuel. they said they set the timming at 24 deg before i got it so all i had to do was put it on my truck with the truck at TDC. i did and it was popping out the stack with a good flame every once in a while. as i tried to spool it up it would get worse and then it would miss really bad and then die like it ran out of fuel. I dont have the proper timming tools to adjust the timming because it seems to me the timming is way off. I tried to adjust the timming every which way and i cant get it to run right. but i am also not sure how far to advance it with out having the right dial indicator tools. If anyone has an idea of what is going on with my truck please let me know! the lift pump pressure is also good, it has 55-60 psi. thanks!

Get the right tools and reset it. Im not sure how you can set the timing before you put the pump in.

The only thing I can think of is if they put the plunger at the right lift and all you have to do is install and tighten the gear down at tdc. The main problem is the pump shaft can move during an install and such. Heck, we set my friends timing to 27ish because it kept jumping when we simply put the engine back to tdc, it doesnt take much to make it move.

I tried the poor boys method of advancing the timming after i put the pump back on and it wouldnt run right, it was popping out the exhuast and running like crap and then dying out. so i locked the pump, put everything on TDC then i popped the gear loose off the pump and turned the motor 3/8 of an inch counter clock wise when lookin at the front of the engine. then i locked the gear back down on the pump. it didnt run any better. I did this because i thought maybe they didny advance it like they said cause with the fire out the stack it seemed like it was retarded to much. this didnt help. i even took it a little farther advanced and it still wont run right. im gonna put it all back to where it was and maybe try to retard the timming, maybe they did advance it, and i even took it farther. maybe it was to much in the first place. im not sur but i have been fighting it all week. maybe the pump is just screwed up. let me know what your thoughts are! thanks

Either you gotta get the timing kit or bring it to a shop and get it timed. You might cause damage if the timing is too far back from TDC. If its getting out the exhaust it sounds like its way off.
Is this going to be a pull or drag truck? That timing spec is kinda high for a DD.

its a pulling truck that i have been working on, i had an axle break on me at the first pull this year so while it was broke i took the pump off and had it sent away to get more fuel. but now it runs like crap. i hope nothing is broke, the timming seems to be the problem, but i dont know if it is too much or not enough timming, so im just gonna put it the way it was when i put the pump off and call them and see what to do. they were trying to tell me it was a fuel pressure to the injection pump was to weak but i have 55-60 psi

you said you put everything at tdc? like the plunger too? you really need to just get the timing tools and do it right. tdc on the plunger isnt the injection point, its way below that.

Sounds like your timing has to be arround 40 degrees. Yes the pump only locks in at one spot. lock the pump in with the pin on the side of if. then pop the gear back lose, then find TDC on the engine, since you don't have any tools use the timing pin right below the pump on the front cover and re install everything and it will be right arround to 24 degrees then.
