Pump timing, POD's, and other thoughts...
I don't readily have any way to check my pump timing on my truck. I advanced it about 1/8 inch when I reinstalled the pump. With the POD's, my truck smokes a good amount of blue smoke. I'm told this is usually alleviated by more timing.
How far is too far?
What risks and benefits are there to advancing it more than 1/8 inch?
I don't have heat issues or anything, just want less blue smoke.
Regards,
Kevin

Unfortunately the only way to really tell where you're timed is to find true TDC and stick a gauge in it. I had mine timed (moved) to where I thought it was a good deal over stock. Got the pump rebuilt, bench timed, and it is way farther up the gear case than it was before. I have had others that were at 2.1 at the same place my curent pump is on this truck. Every engine and pump combo is a little different.
Now, if you want to bump it a little farther, and see what it sounds like, go ahead, If you get a rattle like an old, cold 6.2/6.9 (both used same fuel pump), or an older Mercedes, you know you've gone too far.

The old POD haze, the only time mine doesn't haze is when is shut down.
The down side to advancing the timing is increased peak cylinder pressures and the heat from combustion stays in the cylinder longer and could lead to piston damage from excessive heat, even if the pyro is in the safe zone.

I'm with wanna on that one, put it to the head. I did and it burns the fuel better, the blue smoke is visible at temps below 65F and gets worse as the temp drops. I don't know which injector washers you have in there, but most of us are running 0.020" instead of the thick stock ones, that cuts the smoke as well. Your sig shows the 4 inch as a future mod, better get to it with the pods! Some cooler air will help you out a ton too, unless you like tons of diesel smoke without smoking the tires.

uhm look into the way a high hp inj is made, they pump liquid with an abrasive through them to increase the hp rating, a edm is precisely cut on edm machine.
In terms of quality a pod is a stone knife compared to a edm. Now that being said, I never implied a pod wasnt a good injector, they do exactly what they were made to do, smoke and make hp, an edm just does the hp a lot better with lot less smoke.

let me finish the statement too if you don't mind loch... edms make more HP with a lot less smoke for a fair amount more money. pods are a way to get ditry HP for low bucks.

It's also mentioned that they have a 265 bar pop pressure (stock is 245 IIRC) which will retard timing if timing isn't added at the pump.

the POD's aren't extrude honed... they are an OEM injector made for a different application...
there's nothing wrong w/ extrude honing... my DDP4's burn WAY cleaner than the 370's did (which is the 2nd gen equivalent to the POD's)
