Pump Timing am I up the creek

I just took the IP off my (92 d350 auto , stock , 146,000)and took it in for a rebuild. They had to replace the pump housing and there are no timing marks on it.
Can I measure the mark on the old housing and transfer it to the new pump housing or are there variances in the way they machine the housings that would make this Idea usless.
I should add I relize if you install the pump with the engine set to tdc #1 and the pump still locked from the rebuild it will time up OK, but how close will it be to the original setting.

just put it about half way in the slots, and start from there, advance or retard to you liking, retard if it has wight smoke and realy laggy turbo, advance if mileage is down has lots of low end power and it lacks top end. when you get it where you like it, mark it with a chizzle

If the engine IS tdc with the timing pin and the pump IS locked in the correct place put it on the truck and make a mark on the new pump housing in line with the mark on the truck. Then do what ever timing adjusting you want to do. Don't forget to unlock the pump and take out the timing pin before crank up.

this is the correct procedure.Time pump out of truck(lock the shaft).bring truck to TDC(lock gear with pin)install pump, mark housing, then unlock pump and advance if you want.Always mark your baseline(stock) so you can return or make note of progress

If you haven't removed the gear out of the timing case, and the gear hasn't jumped any teeth, then just line up the key of the shaft with the key way on the gear. Then slide it in and as stated rotate the pump to the middle of the slots and see how it runs.

Thanks for all the info. I wanted to be able to get it back to the same timing so I could see what just a pump rebuild would do to the EGT, power and milage.I'm looking to get better milage as I use it to pull a 30 ft 5er full time.

The tool kit to time it properly is not that expensive.

You will also need a barring tool, about $45 from Snap-on.

I've never had any luck getting it to actually turn the engine. Also I believe it turns the engine backwards.

I used to use a pry bar to turn my engine over. I think I put it between the bolts on the fan. Not much fun. Barring tool is worth it.

You can use a regular dial indicator to check timing as well. Stick the magnetic base to the side of the block. (You have to have a good magnet)
