Pump Installation Problems

Last week my friend and I removed his pump so we could take off the inspection plate. We got everything removed, cleared the blowby tube and put everything back together. It really wasn't all that bad, about 4 hours worth of work with constant breaks to drink some cold brews . However once we got the pump back on we tried timing it. We followed the correct procedures, found tdc, preset the dial to 7-9mm backed off until it stopped dropping, advanced the timing until we got to about 16.5 degrees. We then took the gear off, reversed the engine until we went past tdc, and then forward to tdc again. After that we put the gear back on, tested it to see what lift we were at and everything looked good. We tried starting it and it wanted to kick over but nothing but white smoke came dumping out of the exhaust like we were timing it on the wrong stroke. We found tdc by the timing pin so I dont see how we timed it on the wrong stroke. Could the pump be 180 degrees off like a distributor? We are kind of lost about how to fix it. We are waiting on a new barring tool since mine finally stripped out after only 5 timings(piece of junk). Any help would be appreciated guys.

Did, we miss something? Were you supposed to pin the pump before taking it off?

Take valve cover off #1 and make sure intake and exhaust are both closed for compression/power stroke. The fact that the P7100 #1 plunger is moving to max stroke at 16 Deg before TDC at same time proves you are not off 180 Deg.

recheck your timing, that happened to me and it was just because the timing slipped from 16* to 8* as soon as i hit the starter!!

That's true, it might be just keep slipping. Where can you get that lock washer, I think the origional one is worn out and we should replace it. Thanks guys.

I got mine from PDR but I would bet any Cummins dealer will have them.

Pump should have been pinned before removal.

Did you get it all worked out? Please post your status. Thanks, KD

Just wanted to get you guys an update on the pump timing. We got a new lock washer from napa and after retiming it with the new washer, and a very hard start it ran great. His 3500 really gets up and goes now. Thanks for the help guys.
