Pump help
Turned up the star wheel last night, rotated the eccentric (sp?) cone. Deepest part to the front of the truck, which is where I found the needle to be. There was a lot of corrosion in there, it looks like the needle may be siezed. I sprayed some wd-40 in there and tried to pull it out with a magnet to clean it. I thought I read here that some guys had to do this. I couldn't get it to budge. I also cleaned some crud off the cone. Looking for suggestions on fixing this. I suspect this may be part of my mileage problem.
Thanx guys,
Don
Also I'm ready for the Old Smokey mount. I have his address in a PM, anybody know if this is still a good one? I understand he was at a new job.

Redleg,
with the top of the diapraghm off and eccentric out, start the truck..the pin should pop out. Once it is out, spray some good penetrating fluid on there and push it back manually in its seat. Repeat this as many times as you like. After you are done, clean the eccentric and dab a little bit of grease on it.

I asked him about one several months ago and he said he did not have any left and would not be making any this summer, due to being out of town. I think it was for a new job. I am ready for mine also, but we'll just have to wait.

Re:Pump help
Thanks again Monty, I wouldn't have dared start the truck with the stuff apart. I'll try to get to it tonight. Hopefully soaking all night with the wd-40 helped.
Farmall, I heard from him rith before he started the new job, he seemed pretty excited about it. Just had to fix a headlight wire last night. Gotta get off my duff and secure the filter better.

Re:Pump help
Redleg, also, with the pump top off and the truck started, you will have to cycle the truck from idle to WOT to get the pin to come out. If it doesnt come out all the way every time, or hangs now and then, it is sticking.
Re:Pump help
Why start the truck? I just cycle the throttle to full open and the pin pops out or are you thinking the internal pump pressure will help? I'd be careful. The pins have been known to pop out completely

Re:Pump help
Did it while it was running, pin went all the way to the opposite wall of the bowl, and fule filled up the bowl. Couldn't get it to go back in. Shut the truck down, soaked up the fuel so I could see, it took awhile, but finally got it to go back in. Popped it out a couple more times opening the throttle with the engine off. Seems to be all good now. Next question, do the copper rings on the banjo bolt at the diaphram need to be replaced every time they are removed? Seems to hesitate when starting now. Also did this yesterday, before I played with the pin, and after I had the cover apart.
Re:Pump help
Red,
You should keep an eye on the inside of the AFC housing for a while. You may find that you are weeping fuel into it due to the pin coming right out..
When that happens, it also allows air into the pump and air is not good for things.
If that has happened then it may also cause poor starting/idle quality as well.
Bob.

Re:Pump help
Well, now I feel bad that I told him to cycle the throttle with the engine started. :-[ I am almost positive though that you said this was okay Bob?
Bushy, check your instant messages ;D

Re:Pump help
Test, test, test, that's what this hobby is all about...
The only reason I knew not to do it to mine was because someone (can't recall who now..) pulled their cone assembly right out and drove it that way..... the result, the guide pin popped out followed by fuel.
I imagine it's because the supply pump has pressure against the back of the pin.
You know, you'd think that the pin would be retained by SOMETHING wouldn't you...
Hey, maybe I need to go look at the schematic again. I took it for granted the pin was NOT retained...hmmmm....
edit: Red' don't worry about those washers... they are good for lots of Off/On stuff. Just be sure the banjo is tight and the manifold nut is tight. Remember they are thin so it'll take a bit of care to not overdo them is all.

Re:Pump help
Well, the pin did come out, and filled with fuel. I'll dry everything and check it again, I want to adjust the star wheel again anyway. It is starting ruff, idles fine, but the idle is up a bit (no tach). I want to check to be sure the ruff start isn't from the fuel lines at the tank. I think it started hard once before I messed with the pin, close to when I found the line leak.
If line replacement doesn't help, can I pull the throttle linkage and take the pin assembly apart to fix this? Might be a good time to do the governor spring as well.
