Project Pops build-up
Project Pops build-up
Whats up guys!?! I am about to start a build-up on my dads work truck. Its a 2000 3500 4x4 Cummins 5spd. Right now it has a Comp Box, 275RVs, replacement muffler(stock piping), stock air box cut out with a drop in filter, SouthBend OFE, and a Holley Blue. Right now it has a smoked stock turbo, oil leaks(only when pulling), and hard starts. He doesnt care about cosmetics, mileage, noise, or smoke all he wants it for is to pull his bulldozer(30klbs)
I have been getting a stock of parts for it, so far I have.....
-5" hx40 down pipe
-5" MBRP exhaust
-top side gasket set w/head gasket
-egt and boost gauges w/ a-pillar pod
I am still looking for a good turbo. I have been hunting a hx-40, and they either go too fast, or are not in good enough shape. I am now leaning towards a new Phat Shaft 62 from Industrial Injection. Do any of you guys run this turbo? Likes? Dislikes? How is the spool-up? EGTs?
Is they're anything you think I should do while I am in it? TIA

I'm running one. It's a great turbo. Spools fast and cools well. With smarty and injectors only I can hit 1350*. With the BD 155's, TST on 1, and smarty I could hit 1200-1300*. I recommend getting the 71mm wheel and at least a 14 housing. It'll cool better and spool just the same. That's what I'm going to be upgrading to here shortly.

I doubt it, he just wants it to pull. Maybe in the future we will stack a Smarty with the Comp, but nothing more than that........ until I buy it from him when hes done.
BTW: I have to put a Gooseneck hitch in my truck to get his up here too. I might need some extra arms to pull my bed off. Ya'll interested? I will supply the refreshments

A 62-12 is a very good all around turbo and very solid in towing applications as well as a good base for power adders. High Tech Turbo makes a very good one that will save you quite a few $ compared to the Phat Shaft Turbo's.
I also echo the "why are you taking the bed off?" Go get a B&W turn over ball hitch. You won't have to take off the bed. Not sure on other hitches, but I don't think so on most others either.
Good luck,

Interesting, you cut expense on the hitch but not on the turbo? If $200 is a big deal to you, a HTT will be easily be $200 less for the same turbo from II, probably more like $400 or more. None of my business really though. From what I've seen HTT turbo's are every bit as good as II's and customer service is much better at HTT. You'll get a good turbo at II, so no big deal. I don't have a dog in the fight, just as I've researched turbos I haven't seen any advantage of similarly spec'ed turbo's from II over HTT.
Good luck to you and Pops on the truck!
I would rather have an II turbo though.
Good luck to you and Pops on the truck!

That might depend on where you are buying from. PDW is selling II ps62's for around 150 bones less than the htb2

BTW, I was talking about what you can buy them from, not retail, that's why I have a range.
BTW, I have nothing against II whatsover. I have an II HRVP and have only bought some parts from HTT. Just sharing what I had observed out there.

I don't know why you need a bigger turbo? I used bigger injectors 90rwhp and used the little HY turbo. I pulled loads but not 30k. A Hx-40 will be sluggish but pulling it will work well. What kinda of boost numbers you got? With 275rv injectors a stock HX-35 wastegated to 35 psi would work. Run you comp box in the 3X3 area. I liked the extra power that it gives you. You could try a larger turbine housing or go the hybred 35/40 turbo. Its cheaper than other turbos. Pulling that heavy I would rather use less power than more power. Things start to break easier pulling heavy and using higher HP. You could start having lots of other issues like clutch, differential and/or transmission. You should also use a injection pump fuel pressure gauge.

ya mike knows what he 's talkin about you need gauges and if you dont have a clutch obviously gonna need one. i think a htt 62/13/71 series it doesnt sound like he is worried about the money. its a really nice turbo and will work well. i have towed just over 30k and my truck did alright.but that was with twins, it seemed pretty hard on the drive lines but its dana so im not to worried. i think it will do pretty good, they are expensive, but a 35/40 i would say is a waste of money, because when you want to upgade injectors or boxes. then yourr eventualy going to need soem new blow, because the 35/40 cant cool. so i would go a little big,in the 62/12,13,14/71 and that will dool better etc....

He usually pulls with the Comp box on 1, I would like him to be able to pull on 5, and keep EGTs down low. I think I will just install a low FP light also to keep an eye on the pressure. I think the VP44 is about to go also, then I will go to a Hot Rod Pump.
