Problems With the 6.2
Problems With the 6.2
yesterday I was driving to school and lost oil pressure. The motor started knocking real loudand lugging i thought maybe it was an injector pump at first. I parked it at a gas station and later got a tow home. does anyone know of a cheap rebuild kit, or maybe a 12 valve ctd for sale. please help.
Most engines get a real bad attitude when you run them out of oil. No sense of humor.I don't think there are any cheap kits for what you need. Look for a used one someplace or do a conversion to a small block and a th350. Not sure but I think a pont 350 will bolt up to the 6.2 tranny. Call a bone yard that has a Hollanders book to see what will interchange.
I have rebuilt a 6.2 that was run out of oil.. It was UGLY.
7 out of the 8 pistons were cracked around the ring lands, 1 conrod had a broken stud and the oil pump was a mess. Funny thing was the crank and the cam were in good shape. One of the cylinders was cracked vertically so we had to have it sleaved.
If you do go the rebuild route its pretty cheap really if you do it yourself.. I think we spent under $2500 on parts and getting the block magnafluxed and pressure tested as well as the heads done. The injectors and pump were fine so that saved alot of the cost. Once you tap into the fuel system that cost doubles instantly.
The bellhousing on the 700R4 for the 6.2 is actually a big block pattern, so you would have to go with a big block engine or get a new tranny as well to go gas.
Good luck with that..

Allot of guys upgrade to the 92-93 6.5td, more power.
92 and 93 had mech injection pumps, lot less headaches. Put an oil pan & pump from a 98+ on it for an extra quart of oil. I think it was 97, they put dual thermostat housing and a larger water pump on them to keep them cool. They have a bad habit of running hot. See my sig, have a 92 with 275,000 miles and serveral upgrades, you can pm me for more info if you like.
Me, my experience, I would find a 12v and put it in there. Or like Lil dog said, a 454 will work.
