To pre-fill oil filter or not?

How many of you pre-fill your oil filter before you put it on? I have read that it is bad to do it since your putting oil into the unfiltered side? Thoughts?

I fill my filter so when I start the engine, there will be less of a delay to get oil to the parts that need it. As far as putting oil on the "unfiltered" side? I haven't read any report, but I would suspect brand spanking new Delo or Royal Purple is pretty clean. Just a guess.
Back to morning brew. . .

If you think your New oil is dirty, you better start buying a different brand of oil.

I have always filled my filters up. I'm sure if you don't, it takes less than a couple seconds to fill when you start the engine, but it gives me piece of mind knowing that the expensive internal parts are getting oil ASAP.

Yes. It is also stated in the owners/service manual to fill the filter.

Just watch that aluminum seal crap off the oil jug so that it does not fall into the filter.

I have always done this too, especially with turbocharged engines. I believe that although there is a very small chance of the new oil having a contaminate in it, there is a greater chance that the momentary oil starvation while the filter fills will add up to more wear over the life of the vehicle.

I do as well, all my filters actaully. It was an article in TDR that mentioned about possible particles in the filters themselves that might cause the problems. It says that the moment that it takes to fill the un-filled filter won't do any harm to the motor. I run Rotella Synthetic, so I am not worried about oil quality and I am going to continue to fill my filter before I start ( I have for 6 yrs now, why stop) I was just curious as to what the masses say!

Fill

I fill all filters if possible. Including fuel... I was taught that by the old guy also (father)... Born and raised on a farm, we always prefilled any filter if at all possible. I even remember watching him fill car filters that go on at an angle and cleaning the new oil off the outside of the filter and off the shop floor because some slipped out as it was being put on...
I will always prefill...

I never fill it, and my oil psi comes up as fast as it does on a normal day, and faster than it does on a 0° day. My oil psi sender is on the block above the ECM, well past the filter.

New oil isn't as contaminate free as one would think and I would rather the split-second delay than put a large micron particle thru my system.

Fill it, any contaminates in the new oil are well below what a standard filter can capture. You also saturate the filter media which helps to prevent a hydraulic shock load to dry media.
