Power steering line issues!

Hi everyone, I have just replaced the power steering gear box on my 92 4x4 and in the process I broke the steel return line to the pump. The problem is that I can not get another one. I have tried UAP, car quest, parts source, and of course the dealer. NO one can get me the part! I'm desperate to get it back on the road but not sure where else to go. any ideas?

Any hose place can redo the end for you. Try to find one local that does A/C lines and such. There's a place in Phoenix, that can rebuild any line. I did the exact same thing you did there on my 93, and as long as you have the line and the fitting, they can rebuild the line for you.

yikes, my local napa had both my hoses on the self... but I bet the 4x is different. Most machine shops build hoses too.

I ran into the same problem when I replaced the box on my 93 4x4. I broke both lines, dealer oredered them both for me. The pressure line was right, the return line was not even close, it wasnt bent right and the fitting wasn't the right size. It happens to be the same fitting for a GM fuel line, which i tried but could not get the a tight enough 90 degree bend to clear the inner fender. I ended up oredering a return line for a 93 with a 5.9L gasser. The fitting and 90 degree was ok, so I just cut the steel tube and ran hose from there back to the pump

Wow thanks for all the replys! it must be a Canadian Napa problem, they could only get the high pressure too line, not the return. i will try to order the gas return line and see how it goes. if no luck there i'll start looking for local macheen shops and i think there's an a/c shop close by,

thanks again for all the help, i'll let you know how it goes!

Smile Old threads are your friends

See the last post in this thread:

Go to the NAPA website and do a search for the part number without the dash (that is, "72402"). You'll find your part for less than $13. I had one of these fabricated by a local hydaulic shop but it ran me $30.

And remember, "Old threads are your friends."

I looked thru some receipts from Napa and came up with this: pressure hose 7-2390, Line NPS, net price $22.21; return hose 7-1899 (which is crossed out with 3B-2SS written over it) Line NPS, net price $10.59 'merican. That was 5/07 and I remember having problems getting the return tubing. So, you can check those numbers and maybe it will help.

Thanks for the part numbers they worked great! And I’m now trying to get them shipped up to Canada. Napa Canada doesn’t recognize those numbers and US Napa will not ship to Canada. What I think I’m going to do is ship from Napa on-line to a friend of mine in Boston and gets him to ship them to me.

It’s a lot of shipping but I think it’s the best way to do it.

Any thoughts?

shipping won't put you out of the price range to have a local shop repair the end?

Best to send it by the US Postal Service or pay the "$20 brokerage fee" UPS charges.

Now who makes the flaring tool that would be required to make that line??

Pull out the phone book and look for a hydraulic shop in your area. Have a hose built. Just had a friend's P/S return line rebuilt for his Daewoo for $40 at a local shop. Ottowa should be a big enough town to have someplace to do that for you cheaper than shipping.

The problem is once the OEM unit is destroyed, it is difficult for the hydraulic shop to know exactly what they are trying to replicate. The OEM part has a tight 90 degree turn very close to the steering box end of the tubing that is difficult for the shop to copy.

My shop-made unit works but doesn't fit nearly as well as OEM. And I'm now missing the OEM support bracket that connects the steel tubing to a bracket that hooks over the head of one of the steering box mounting bolts. Had I used the NAPA unit I would have eliminated both of these issues.
