The power steering went out and the brakes are funky feeling (both kinda work while driving it but when sitting they are dead).

The repair shop says there is metal in the fluid which requires the pump, hydroboost and steeering box to be replaced for the low low price of $1400.

Does this sound right? Why cant they replace the pump and just flush the system?

Not sure how the hydroboost works but I imagine metal in the fluid can't be good. Did they say where the metal was coming from?

The price does sound about right.

I was assuming the metal came from the pump but I was so ****** to hear the cost I ended the conversation short and told them to hold off doing anything until I could do some research.

I will talk with the shop this morning and get their story entirely.

I am not surprised at the cost predicted by a dealer.

I called them concerning the purchase of a power steering pump recently when my pump started making more noise.

They wanted over 780.00 for the pump which comes with everything attached. It is the only way they would sell everything. This was a reduced price they were quoting to me as well.

I bought an after market for 60.00 and did it myself.

Rented the pulley puller/installer from O'Reilly.

The metal likely came from the steering box. $1400 to replace all of that isn't bad if you're using OEM parts. Dodge r@pes you on the parts cost, like 3-4x what the cost is at Napa. And the Napa parts are lifetime warranty.
I just had my steering box replaced and opted to have the pump replaced at the same time since it was so cheap. Napa steering box is $150 and pump is $50. I paid 3hrs labor at a shop I trusted (because I'm working away from home and don't have the time or means to do it) @ $90/hr which is considerably less time than it would have taken me in my garage. Total bill for everything except the hydro boost was about $600.

Howdy guys. I hope you don't mind my ignorance about engines however then i haved the same problem two months ago and just wann share my experience about the said issue. So mine was a dodge 97. One time when i was driving i've been noticing that the power steering fluid was leaking and was worried about it. I have a mechanic who has a better knowledge about it. He told me to purchase an inferior parts and that is shown on the image below. It's about $150 cheaper than the dealer and has a lifetime warranty and thus i end up with the replacement of the said part with one of Houston auto repair shops and the labor cost about $190 so the total cost was almost $500 including the part as well as the labor. remembered the name of the shop ( Scott Kevin Auto works)#248 School St, Houston, DE, 19954 (Map) tel:302-424-1514: Anyone here who's interested for a cheap and efficient power steering repair is free to visit the shop.

If I was you, I would remove the return line from the PS cooler and get 5 gallons of off road diesel fuel. If you do not want to use fuel then spend the big bucks on PS fluid.

Have one friend pour the fluid into the ps pump while another friend steers left to right, may need a third to ensure the return fluid goes into a bucket.

My brakes were acting weird as well as my pump - would one have power assist in one direction. After this flushing of the pump - everything works great. It is worth at least a try to see if you problem is contamination.

yup, thats what i would do.....either that or carb cleaner. the pump on my 03 dump truck t totally died (i drove it home manual brakes and steering, flushed it with a/c cleaner and put on a new pump) its been on it for 5 years

you should be able to buy a new pump with the reservoir for around 220 bucks

and you WILL have to have a special wrench to get to the nut on the back side of the pump. unless your like me and cut one up and beat it with a hammer. Its not a hard swap though, probably takes a hour or so
