Potential purchase 2006 mpg.

I've only been on the forum for about a week now and I'm considering selling my PSD and buying a Dodge Cumins diesel.

I've read a few posts about poor fuel mileage with the 06's and was wanting to hear form other owners about this issue. As a previous diesel owner I realize mileage may increase some over time but my PSD has gotten 11 mpg since the day I bought it and I have 85K on it right now and mpg hasn't changed one bit.

Thanks for any help.

I had a 2000 Ford Excursion PSD 7.3 and got 14mpg city and 16 mpg highway.
I have a new 2006 Mega Cab CTD and I am getting 13mpg city and 16mpg highway. I currently have 1500 miles on the truck.

How accurate is the overhead mpg calculation. I drove a megacab today in the freeway and it was reading 15.6 I was driving at a steady 65mph.

For a brand new engine, 15.6 isn't too bad.
I find the overhead to be accurate to within 1mpg.
I am usually only off a few tenths, when I hand calculate.

I pulled about 240 miles today 26ft enclosed extra tall (brick wall) weighing about 7k and got a hand calc of 12mpg even this was at speeds of 75 to 80 the whole time. Not bad figures at all for those speeds.

I've been pulling about 17.5 or so hand calc around town and about 19 freeway at 75mph. So far I've been really impressed with the auto and the MC.... I just wish it had 5 or 6 gears like the comp does...

If MPG is a concern go with the 3.73 gears. I have 4.10's and with 3 mods getting 18 MPG. Seems guys on here are getting 19 to 21 with the 3.73's and close to the same mods. Been studying on it for a while using the search function on here. Get the LSD though.

No. You won't need it anyway, the gear ratio in 6th keeps the rpm's up at highway speeds. 3.73 is your only choice. If you had a G56 and 4.10's you would probably be around 2800 rpm's at 75mph.

Realistically, you should expect 13-15 in town and 16-18 at Interstate speeds of 70-75mph. If you drive slow i.e. 55-65 mph you could get 18-20mpg's. If you do drive like that, please stay in the right lane.

I have almost 12k (tomorrow it will go over) on my 06 and I get around 13mpg's in town, around 12-14 towing, and around 16.5-17 on the Interstate at 72-75mph.

final so mpg

ok i have been tring to get some better mpg since i bought my truck in november if you read my trucks profile it all tell what i have all done. I was getting 9.5 to 11 mpg (i also have a lead foot) plus **** pour power. I have been waiting for an edge attitude for the 06s, but just couldn't take it anymore and bought a superchips programer and all i can say is i should of done it sooner. The power is impressive and my mileage has basically doubled, not kidding either i'd put my left nut on it. i filled up with fuel drove from kansas city north 103 miles at 80-85mph on the interstate and topped it off again and got 19.54 mpg best that this truck has ever done

Your mileage went up that much?

I just turned 700 miles on my 06 and I got 12.5MPG towing my car through the Texas hill country running at 2000 rpm. I am a little dissapointed. Everyone told me I would be getting 15-16 towing and 18-19 unloaded. I need to get the mileage up on mine. I don't tow much and didn't really need the diesel. Just bought it because of the mileage everyone said i would get.
Maybe after break in it will do a little better, but I wouldnt' think it would pick up more than one or two mpg's.

I've come to the conclusion that getting folks to give you the real MPG on their trucks is like getting them to tell the truth to a group of women about how much money they make or how large their ***** is.
I finally backed out on buying an 06 because the mileage is just too low. My 99 PSD with a strong chip will average about 17.5 unloaded and 9-11 towing 14K. An 06 won't beat that and won't outrun or out pull it without a warranty busting box so I decided to keep my pennies for making the Ford a more road/family friendly truck. DynaMat, speakers, stereo, DVD, new paint, 05 front end..etc.
