At what point will an axle give up?LOL

Do I understand the weight rating on my tires correctly? I have a 2wd 3500 drw and the best I can figure it appears to be around 6k lbs. Now with that being said, I have been pulling on occassion a trailer that puts 5400 lbs. tongue weight on my truck when it is empty! I have pulled a couple of loads, unknowing at the time, that grossed about 40k lbs. and put about 10k lbs on the tongue. I have suspended that operation at this time! As you can imagine, I flipped out when i saw that scale receipt. I know everyone has their own opinion about weight issues. What I would like to know is, has anyone ever broke an axle or blew out tires due to the weight? The truck pulls it great, which makes it decieving. I guess thats a testament to the Cummins, huh?

Cummins power yes-- but don't shortchange the Dodge part to. You're over DOUBLE the rated load at 40K gross.

I've never heard of axle failure due to heavy weight.

Tires can fail if over loaded....That why they have Max PSI/LBS on the side walls....its risky to run them over the rated load or pressure.....I have over loaded trailers for short hauls.....one of my smaller trailers was overloaded so much the axles where bending and flexing

Any time you think your over loaded get to a scale and weight the load on the axles even the truck axles.....its bad enuf if something bad happens while over loaded but if it gets outta control you could kill Innocent people too

The real deal is if you are over your licensed weight you have no insurance.

Tires are usually the first thing to give up, but I have seen trailer axles bent bad enough that the tire was rubbing on the trailer frame, causing a nice smoke show rolling down the road.

If you have a dually your tires should add up to way more than 6k. Even the 215/85R16's on my '90 add up to 10k weight rating.

The AAM rear axle in a 3500 SRW is rated for almost 2x what the tires are rated for. AAM rates the axle at almost 11k lbs.

The tire ratings are 3k lbs. per single and 2850 per duals. That makes no sense to me. Why would one be rated for more than two? I saw another posts on here that claimed about the same thing, so it would seem correct. Also, hell no it was NOT a bumper pull! It was a gooseneck. Thanks for your input, I felt sure I was right to be concerned. But we all know how customers are, "get all you can get for the same money", right.

2 X 2850 = 5700 1 x 3000 = 3000

When you hear of a broken axle, it is usually refering to the broken internal parts...ie. axle shaft, ring and pinion, etc.

I've seen plenty of those break at XRRA, UROC, WEROK competitions!

I think dually tires are rated less because of the fact that they might rub if loaded as much as singles.
