plumbing aux fuel tank
I am going to be picking up my "new to me" aux fuel tank in a few weeks. Plans are to have it installed for my next trip out west hauling my rock crawler.
What is the easiest, least expensive way to go about this.
Truck is a 2004.5 that I have already done the vent tank mod.
Is there any reason that I cannot just run a manual valve right off the tank, and tie it into the hose from my vent mod? I would like to have the valve open the entire time that we are towing (around 1200 miles each way). I don't have a problem shutting it off when not in use, as most times I will not need the extra fuel capacity.
Will this work or should I buy the kit from northern?

I just bought parts for mine today. Cost about 30 bucks. Inline filter, tee into vent, a shutoff switch, bunch of fitting to hook line up to switch and stuff, and fitting for the aux tank. Don't really need a kit. You could ask daddy's diesel he made one a bit ago about leaving it open. My plan is to leave it closed until the factory tank needs the fuel.

It should work like you decribed. I went ahead and bought the kit from Northern. It made it a very clean install and I dont have to worry about leaving the valve open from the auxilliary tank.

Well if you read the reviews for the kit, many people don't trust leaving it open, or had a leaking problem. If you want easy, I would get an electric switch. So you can control it much easier.

The last tank I had, the electric switch had gremilins. If this one ever does give me troubles such as a leak than I'll do as you plan to do and just open the valve when needed.

I have done the gravity feed system for about 10 years the only time I have leaking problems is when truck is cold in winter bring it into warm garage it will leak out.But when I am driving I can leave valve open no problems.I plumbed mine into the fill hose Just T,ed it off with a plastic T ,used 1/2 hose from tank. When I trade in truck pull out T and put in a connector.

My tank leaked out of the vents on top of the tank the very first time out with a non valved gravity feed setup. I installed an electric solenoid valve and small pump and have not had a problem since then.

I really hope I can leave mine open without overflowing the OE tank. My switch is right near the factory vent line, under the truck and a pain to reach. Haven't got to use it yet, because when I put a bit of diesel it in I found a small leak from my switch, it's not from my fitting it's the actual thing, so going to have to get a new one
But i'm thinking the setup should work good, once I get the switch part worked out. One question though, i've never had a slip tank before, when your filling it do you have to be careful to stop when it gets near the top? Like mine has a vent on the opposite side of the fuel cap, but will the tank overflow and start pushing diesel out the vent if you keep filling?
