Please tell me it's not true!!!

Of course, just like most of you.... the first thing I did when I got my new beast home was get out the creaper and go-a-snoopn'. Everything seemed to be top drawer, but since I'm a first time Dodge/Cummins owner please try to clear this up for me.

Tell me that the little, itty bitty, white thing on the passenger side of the motor under and between all the intake and intercooler plumbing isn't the oil filter. Tell me it's a fuel filter or something. Tell me it's the water serverator for the fuel. Tell me something more than it's the OIL filter. IF it is the oil filter, HOW IN THE H E DOUBLE TOOTHPICKS are we supposed to get that out with out spilling a drop. Only got 800 miles on her now, but sooner or later she'll need to get fresh'nd up a bit.

Tell me it aint so!

If you want to feel good about your truck go drain the fuel filter on a 6.0 PSD. Allen key and fuel into your armpit lying on your back....
Use a socket cup and extension bar and the oil filter comes right off no prob. One of the easier engines to change the oil on.
Oh BTW not supposed to fill in blanks for swear words here. (*&#$% or hockey sticks kinda stuff) Makes the admin guys mad. We don't like to get them mad. ;D

Re:Please tell me it's not true!!!

I wouldn't say its one of the 'easier' engines to change oil on....try any VW or MB. The oil filters are right up on top, cannister style. If you have a suction device, you don't even need to get under the car. While some say they like to do it the 'old fashioned way' , I've used a suction device and THEN gone under and pulled the drain plug...nothing but a few drips...they really work well. Oh well, at least the cummins has a nice height advantage, try squeezing under my lowered MB! : Even a stocker won't go up on ramps, and with mine I have to use the factory jack to lift the car enough to get a real jack under the jackpads! : OH well, ya gotta pay to play!

Re:Please tell me it's not true!!!

Dunno my Passat is a pain to change the oil on. Hafta remove the undercarriage insulator to get to the oil filter otherwise it drips for ever. The PSD is easy to change oil on also. Any lowered car will be a pain. I wanted to align my NSX at work years ago and needed to build ramps out of lumber to get it on the rack. And it was stock ride height. I've changed more oil than I want to remember. First year apprentice working in a crappy garage that is all I did for 6 months. Yuck. :-X

Re:Please tell me it's not true!!!

If it wasn't for the fact that I got fourteen free oil changes when I bought my truck, I would buy one of those filter relocation kits for mine to get the filter to a more easily accessible location. It was nice on my '01... nice and easy to get to once I popped the hose off the intake side of the turbo.

Re:Please tell me it's not true!!!

I have WAY too much experience changing oil : and trust me, this thing isn't the easiest thing to get to. From my vantage point, you can't take the filter straight out from the bottom. You can't get it out from the top. It is white and not grey though. I have an 04 and white is white.

Glad I got my 14 free as well! That saves me a little hassle. Just hope the dopes at the shop don't make a mess of my new baby.

Cheers!

Re:Please tell me it's not true!!!

Unless the '04 is different from the '03 (which is possible I suppose), it's pretty easy to take out from the bottom. As was stated before, get yourself the little 6 in 1 oil filter wrench and a couple of long extensions and it comes off pretty easy. I spilled a few drops, but using the Ziploc bag trick noted above saved it from getting on me or the garage floor. And....on the '03 it's just a straight shot down. Pretty easy access. I wouldn't try to change it from the top.

For what it's worth, my filter was gray too...but I suppose they could have changed that as well.

I've done 2 oil changes using the method Hoss outlined and I haven't had a bit of trouble. It looks more daunting than it really is.

Re:Please tell me it's not true!!!

It's not that bad. As said above, get the 6-in-1 wrench and a long extension. I used an old T-shirt to finish unscrewing it. Not a drop of oil on the ground.

Re:Please tell me it's not true!!!

Can someone post a pic of this 6 in 1 filter remover? I like to buy things local whenever I can and I don't want to get the wrong item.

TIA

Re:Please tell me it's not true!!!

Changed the oil on my baby this weekend. Used and oil filter socket on the fluted oil filter and it came right off. No mess very easy to get to. Much easier than my 02.

I bought mine at Walmart for about $4...but Geno's also sells them. I'll try to find a picture for you...but the most common one is an orange, kind of cup styled one that slides on the bottom of the filter and locks onto the flutes. You just put it on the filter and stick a 3/8" drive socket extension in it and go.

HERE is a link to the one I bought...only I got it at Walmart. Like I said...it's orange.
