Please help me identify this noise...

First post so sig line isn't done yet...2003 2500 4x4 SLT, Edze EZ, Mag Hytec Deep trans pan, Autometer cubby mount gauges, timbrens.

This is the deal...I had the truck in the dealer's garage for tranny work. They replaced a kickdown band, clutch plate, and a few other insignificant parts. Truck drives fine now but since the work it has developed this noise. I can only describe it as a metallic rubbing or vibrating kind of sound...almost like something is loose and rattling. It's also been described as an old-fashioned type of phone ringing. It only occurs at the ~1800-1900 rpm range. Anything above or below and it's gone. It's always the same loudness/pitch and doesn't get louder under acceleration, load, etc. I returned to the dealer (twice) and, after they finally acknowledged they heard it, stated it's "normal" and another truck they road-tested made the same kind of noise. They said trany/TC is good and maybe it could be a noise associated with the exhaust or something else. Although it's hard to track the source of the noise down while the truck is moving (!) it sounds like it originates in the center of the truck next to where the driver's feet would rest. Frankly, it's driving me nuts! It might even drive me to get rid of the truck and I'd hate to do that!

Any suggestions on what to search for would be greatly appreciated!

i could be way off in left field on this one but i have seen trucks of all makes when the front drive shaft is taken out (maybe during the tranny work) if it is banged or dinged in the least little bit they can cause a vibration and sometimes a noise. i've been through a couple of lifted trucks and in my dealings with the off road shops have seen this occur. might be something to check. take it out drive the truck and see what happens.

First take a deep breath. Its only a truck.
Look for any rubbing marks below. Could be something as easy as a bent or missing hanger. Have the dealership look at it again (or another one) If the noise is related to the earlier repairs then have them fix it. If not have them estimate the repairs. Really not necessary to sell a truck over a rubbing noise, imo.

Yeah...you're exactly right! I think I've calmed down, now. I think everyone has been there before, though. Once you pick up on a "noise" it's hard to get it out of your mind! It's like your brain automatically tunes to that frequency range!
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try to identify the source (again). I'll definately try a "second opinion" route as well.
