Plea for assistance #51

What is the thing the trans fluid runs through under the hood?

Black tube about 1/2 roll of paper towels size by downpipe.

I think it has a line from the water pump hooked in too which makes me think a cooler but it also has the aux cooler and runs through the radiator so.... I don't know.

Also, the oil temp probe is too long to go in the port on the filter. How do you guys get around that?

As usual, thanks for the help. Maybe someday I'll learn enough to help someone. I doubt it though.

Sounds like a cooler but

Sorry had to use it.

Add a long fitting to the probe??

Transmission cooler. For oil temperature, you could use one of the ports in the main oil rifle along the driver side of the block.

Heat exchanger for the transmission also has air to air in front of the radiator

On a "normal" car there is generally a heat exchanger "cooler" for the transmission in the radiator tank. This would not fit in the tank of the Dodge Diesel pick'em up, so, the external cooler (liquid to liquid) was utilized in conjunction to with the air to liquid cooler in the front. And, on some a factory "aux liquid to air" cooler was used under the cab, with an electric, thermostatically controlled fan.

Be aware that the liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger dumps a LOT of heat compared to the typical liquid-to-air heat exchanger, for a given foot-print.

But equally important, it also helps warm the trans fluid to an acceptable minimum operating temperature, quickly after start-up, as well as during the winter.

As a side note, the engine's oil cooler works the same way (warming the lube oil).

Mine is going by by soon. I will report how it works out in the cold weather. I think I might add a transmission pan heater to plug in along with the block heater.

Thanks for all the replies.

I don't know what an oil rifle is.... like a pipe? There are lots of pipes over there. hard to tell what is what.

Since I'm looking for temp rather than psi, I imagine the probe location is more critical. I was considering trying to rig up a tee or something on the filter housing which would be fine for pressure but I'd rather have the probe in flowing oil for temp.

Seems like the pan is prolly ideal but I'm not drilling it anytime soon.

Be careful with the pan it is two layers of steel with some kind of insulation in between.

No drilling for me. I decided I'll pull the factory pressure probe and put my temp there. Move pressure to the filter port.

I plan to also pull the factory trans sensor to make room for my temp. Move factory to one of the ports on the other side or terminate/bypass.

EGT will use the existing downpipe probe until I can drill the manifold.

My isspro tach showed up today and I'm a little tweaked. I thought it came with the stuff to plug in to the truck. At this point I could have bought any tach and been in the same boat. I'll have to bypass the plug and splice the wires I guess.

I think I'm starting to get a clue.

Well, about the gauges anyhow.
