Plate question

I read the plate "discussion" over at TDR and there was mention of possible power loss with the plate moved forward. Does anybody know about this? I was wondering if I should move mine back or not. At WOT mine does produce a pretty fair smoke trail even at 32 pis boost. It also seems my empty mileage has dropped some too. What I do not understand is that when I pull my 26' fiver and 16' boat I gross about 16k and if I keep my speed at about 65 or less I still get about 14 mpg. How can that be? I have not seen my pyrometer go over 1200 degrees even at 34 psi boost. Normal pulling It only runs 550 empty and 750 loaded. Any ideas?

Re:Plate question

I say keep it were you like it, and since your egts dont go over 1200 I would say it is fine were it is.

Re:Plate question

I read that to, and I can only say too much of anything can be bad. I suppose what happens is guy's want more power, cheap. So they move the plate around and adjust on the AFC, but they seem to have an even chance of making less power rather then more. In your situation, since you mentioned you produce a heafty smoke trail will into the boost cycle, I would suspect you have crossed the line a bit. Hence the poor mileage. And since you mentioned that your mileage is not much defferent with a load, this would seem to confirm my suspicions. The extra load the trailer puts on the trucks engine makes up some for this over fueled condition. The extra load keeps the boost higher and the fuel gets burned with a higher amount of air.

Re:Plate question

Yea, that is what I was thinking too. When the weather warms up (read next spring) and maybe by then my neck and arm will be in good enough shape to slide the plate back a little. How does a person find out what the stock position is when the plate was installed before I got the truck?

Re:Plate question

Take off the pump and send it to the pump shop is the only way to find what it should be, but I don't think anyone here would waste the money. If the truck runs good, meaning minimal smoke and decent mileage, I believe I'd let go.
