hey guys, got a question, I have had a post on her recently, explaining my problems, was told by every one a melted piston, on no.1 cylinder, okay, opened the engine up, all the tops look great, its actually the sides of the pistons pitting, and worn, no.1 actually wore the rings down to where they broke, and now have gouged the side of the cylinder, mech says all the rings on all the pistons are worn down and very thin, and the sides on all the pistons are pitted and worn, but the tops llook great, any one know what would cause the side to go, the engine only has 167,000 miles on it, and he says everything is worn like hundreds of thousands of miles, oil changes are regularly, I did run amzoil for a while but just didnt like going as long as they said with out an oil change, so I went back to rotella and lucas which I have had good luck with in all my other trucks over the years, i do run a cold air intake, could this be letting in to much dust and dirt, directly to the engine???im Lost here guys, going to rebuild every thing but sure dont want this to happen again

Very hard to say. Post up some pictures so folks can take a look. An oil analysis is the only real way to know if you dusted the engine. Look at the silicone levels. I don't know much about the Quad filters.

Look at the air intake behind the filter and the tubes going to and from the CAC. If they are lined with dirt or a lot of dust you will know that dusting is the culprit. Beyond that an oil analysis would also be a good idea. One other possibility would be fuel washing down the cylinder walls removing the oil film that lubes them. I would think though that this would have some tell tale signs on top of the pistons too. I would contact Cummins to get their opinion on why also.

My guess is it is a air filter related problem since all the other cylinder walls and rings would show long term wear. Most likely the No.1 injector has been screwing up for a long time ( did say quad pressure box! ) and the oil ring failed by heat damage. Since this guy doesn't have a UOA impossible to determine silicone,iron,fuel dilution etc. count. He says the head is good. Really need to look closely at valves, seats and pushroads don't you think. Then sleeve No.1 or more cylinders.........Good to Goor pay attention to oil anaylisis, oiled filter choice and maintenance and choice of running pressure boxes. Then again it could be attributed to initial breakin....maybe. Anyway you look at it a very expensive you play,,, you pay
