I'll be checking measurements, lash, and pushrods early on Friday if you wanna meet up for breakfast. Should know after a couple of hours if the head will have to come off. Then I definately could use that engine hoist on Saturday.
Let me know if I can buy you breakfast at Randy's Friday morning.

How earlier on Friday cause I got to run to Siler City with a load of cows. I could be back in Lexington by about 9:30.

Since Keegan is busy with honey do stuff right now probably I'll post the update for everyone, I'm sure they will be followed by pictures. We both accomplished to pull the head on his truck this afternoon. The MLS gasket was fried between #3 and #4. There is VERY light damage to #4 on the outer edge but shouldn't affect it in any way. Ohh and Keegan, if your missing a 13mm GearWrench I got it [laugh]

John, everthing else appeared fine, cylinders walls looked excellent. So when I saw the head gasket I thought about to the August issue of Diesel Power where Scott Zaffram killed his headgaset in the same fashion Keegan's kicked the bucket. I keep trying to talk him into o-ringing while the head is off

Thanks for your reply Adam! Glad to hear everything else looked good to you guys!
Yes, I agree, the o-rings or firerings are the way to go IMHO. Especially since Keegan is getting more involved in the drag racing and sled pulling. Water injection might not be a bad idea either!

John, Looks like Johnner called it right. He told me at the dyno event he thought the gasket popped between cylinders... He's a smart one.

Yup, soon as we got the head off you could tell the gasket was on its last leg since they layers were coming apart as well.

To short a notice, to much truck work, a turbo for one guy, injectors for another and a Furd that needs those front bushings.

Keegan had the stock headgasket in there, but had put 12mm studs in sometime last year as I remember. I can't tell you about his boost, EGTS, etc.
though. He will have to get in here and post on that.

Stock gasket on a CR is a MLS style gasket.

Ok time for my stupid question, what is the difference between fire rings and orings. I know what orings are but not the other.

Hey Keegan, I have that cherry picker here off Beck's Church Rd. if you need it. Give me a call. If you come help me load it, I will bring it to you to use.
Do tell on what happened to cause this so that the rest of us don't have the same misfortune. Hate to see anyones truck busted.

74dart:
Hey buddy, it is not a stupid question.;) Let me see if I can explain it to you here where you will understand it.
Firerings are like o-rings but they are "pre-formed" and usually thicker in diameter. As I recall they range in size from .100 to .120 and I believe some are thicker than that too. You can either cut a groove in the cylinder head for a firering, but IMO, the better way to go, is to cut the grooves into the block right around the top of each cylinder. The firering then takes the place of the metal ring in the cylinder head gasket to seal the head.
Hope that was clear for you 74dart,......if not let me know.

To add to what John posted, if you get the new style Scheid gasket like I did they don't cut the block or head for the fire rings.

Are the rings incorprated into the gaskett then?
Mcmopar

No, you set the gasket down, then place the rings inside the gasket.
74dart
03-31-2008, 06:59 AM
And you dont have to cut the head. I might have to look into that when it is time to change mine again.

Figured I would post an update. Keegans computer crashed so he hasn't been able to be on here and post pictures. The head should be on its way to Tim's to get it o-ringed and resurfaced. He is also going to check the valves to make sure everything is ok. We both are keeping our fingers crossed that we will have everything back together for Mopars!

If you drive that head up there yourself be real careful through Lawenceville Va. They like to catch speeders. Don't ask how I know this.[nonono]
I hope it works out so at least you can drive it down to the Rock.

The plan is to pick the head up from Tim at Creswell on Saturday, that should give us more than enough time to get her put back together and try her out. Rodney, how is the work on your truck coming along?

Well it is coming along o.k. Hopefully I will be driving it down to Creswell this weekend. If not I will drive a gasser down there. Either way I will be there.
