Pay to Play - Are manuals really much cheaper?

Got the quote for transmission work today. I called up Enterprise and priced a EEP DD clutch, slave cylinder, 5th gear nut, hardened 1.375" input and labor.<rant on> I thought a manual was cheaper to make HP safe? I wasn't expecting the total bill to be over $3k. :'( :'( :'( How much money does it take to build a auto to hold 650 HP? $3800? Don't get me wrong, I love a tranny that I completely control, but isn't the general consensus that manuals are easier to build for power? <rant off>

The good news is that the o-ringing, cam and valve work is cheaper than I imagined. I can't wait until tax refund time!

*puts soap box away*

Brandon,
Well some of that "manual" is cheaper stuff is true.
Up to a certain point in horsepower a manual is cheaper.

Usually up to about 500hp you can get away with just a Clutch in a Manual, as long as you dont sled pull every weekend.

That is around $1000-$1500.

With an auto, your usually going to sink in $2000.

But, if you are talking 600+hp and sled pulling and drag racing.
Be prepared for the $4000-6000 depending whether your Auto or Stick.

That old thinking is out the window. There isn't much difference in price or reliability. Both are expensive to rebuild and to maintain. It still as always just comes down to personal choice, what is it that you like? Both have positive and negative aspects, but both do share an expensive repair bill. In many respects it seems that the auto may well be cheaper in the long run, they seem to stabilize with reguard to cost, once they have been up-graded to handle the power. Where no matter what up-grades are done to the manules, they will always need clutch replacements.
