Park brakes
Park brakes
Had the rear disc and park brakes apart today.
Dug into the park brakes to see what was going on and found a few suprises. 2500 series trucks don't have to remove the hub, the rotor slips off the hub after removing the caliper mount.
For those that want to know, they are not self adjusting as some seem to think. Yes, they are a similar design to regular drum brakes but minus the self adjusting hardware. There is an adjusting starwheel to manually adjust the brakes thru the backing plate.
Also had a leaking rear hub seal that had no external indication of a problem. Because of that, it wasted the park brake shoes on the one side. Scary thing was I was under the truck before hand to adjust the park brake and there was absolutely no indication of a leak from the backside of the brake assembly. Pulled the disc rotor off and WOW, what a mess!!!
For the extra amount of time to pull the rotors, it sure seems like a better idea just to see what is going on inside as well as properly adjusting the park brakes. Doing one side at a time only took me a little over an hour so it's not really a big deal. Plus, if there is a problem, you'll find it.
Have to order the parts tomorrow and do it all over again!! Love these trucks!!!! LOL!!!!!
