p7100 giving out-questions??

hey guys; been perusing the site for a few months now & thought I would post. I am buying a 94 2wd cummins & the governor seems to be out on it. I keep hearing that most folks just replace the whole injector pump; is this typical??? $800-1300 for a pump when only the governor is bad? Isn't that like throwing the baby out with the bath water? I thought p7100's were "good for a million miles" lol. I know the pump isn't bad, just the governor. Can they be replaced easily instead of the whole p7100? Also where's the cheapest place to buy a p7100?? I don't have alot to spend; I'm just trying to get out of paying too much to fill my gas dodge to pull my trailer & get into a REAL truck-a cummins! Any help / pointers would be greatly appreciated-thanks!!

That 94 has a 160hp pump, if you intend to mod the truck at all youll be glad you stepped up to a 215.

My tuck runs well with a little 160 pump. Honestly unless you are looking to build a Hot Rod there is plenty of power to be had with that pump. I would read up on it and just dig in,otherwise pull it and have somone go through it,or you can do as Kawi says and go for big power and buy a nice new pump that flows a lot of fuel.....

As far as the P7100 being indestructible, they're pretty reliable, but I've seen a few fail over the years. I've sent some in as an exchange for a reman, and I've sent some in for repair. If you send it to a diesel shop for repair, they'll probably want to go through the whole pump and give it an overhaul, and it may end up being the same price as a reman but take longer.

so is it more cost effective to fix the governor & put it back in, or replace the whole dang thing, IP & all?? The truck only has 148k on it...
Also I want to mod it some, but if I step up to a bigger IP, how will that affect MPG? I want to retain the best mileage I can for now till this price gouging BS calms down....

Have you asked a diesel shop how much it would cost to fix the govenor linkage? My pump has the same problem.Govenor shuts the truck down after a hard pull.I decided to go with a reman 215 pump(on order)...I checked the cost and it was close to buying a rebuilt pump..

I used to think similarly. However, a mild 215 pump will make the same power as a twisted 160pump, but will have much better manners.

That has been my experience anyway.

Ask Jim Fulmer. He has run both.

I am trying out Pensacola Diesel They charge 725$ for a stock 215hp, and 845$ for a 245hp. With core exchange of course.

IM running Pensacola Diesels "hot" pump ive had it for about a month. I like it. If i had to do over though i would just get the stock instead of the "hot" pump that is 100.00 more. just add a # 10 and at least I'm thinking it will be the same power output. Seems like it is at least. Ill know tomorrow.
