P0251, P0524 and diesel fuel in oil~! HELP

here it goes...I threw a 0251 (CP3 pump regulator control) a week ago and because I've had this before about 6 months ago and the dealer replaced the HP pump (not related to the code) I didn't think much of it and thought I'd have it looked at in few days. Saturday I threw a 0524 code (low oil pressure, happened at idle) and I checked the dipstick. Turns out it was way over full! Engine sounded OK...of course it was a Saturday and the good mechanics were off until Monday. Drove it home and when I looked under the truck it was covered with diesel/oil/soot...the kind of soot that we get in the engine oil in the 2005's. I figure it was coming out of the blow by tube and a result of too much oil (oil/fuel?) in the crankcase.

So I'm guessing I have a seal gone somewhere ....but where could fuel enter the oil?

I'm going to have a chat with the mechanic foreman on Monday and have it towed in....

Any ideas as to what's up?
Details: Cummins 5.9 L, 66000 kms (about 40000 miles) so barely broken in. Have a quad box set at 60hp, but don't think this has anything to do with it.
Other mods in my sig, but nothing else to the engine.

You have cracked an injector body. Take your stuff off before you take it in or they will deny the warranty and you will be stuck with the bill. Oh, pull a fuel sample for your self because more than likely they will try to tell you fuel contamination and not cover it under warranty.

Thanks...box and harness are already off and good suggestion to pull a fuel sample. I fill up at a truck stop and the filter is in good shape, so they'd have a battle on their hands.
Any idea what would cause this? (other than a bad injector waiting to happen?)
I'm thinking that if one injector is bad, will the rest be going at some point? Hey, I'm looking for an excuse to get F1 injectors....

you have a bad injector, make sure that the mechanic connected the electrical connector on the CP3. I had the same thing happen to me about 100 miles away from the house a week ago. I had the trailer loaded and was on the way home. you will need to pull the valve cover and start the engine. while it is running disconnect the connector on the CP3, it will max out the fuel pressure to the injectors. This will show you wich injector is faulty causing the fuel to enter your valve train and get pushed out of the blow by tube. I sent my injector nozzles off to get extrude honed. (-:

I assume the quad box adds pressure. My truck never had a pressure box and I got fuel in my oil from an injector sticking open. They maxed out fuel pressure and couldn't find any leaks. Cleaned # 5 as it was low on delivery and all is good. I should have done f1 or DDP injectors since they were out. Our local diesel shop doesn't like the internet and I am sure he wouldn't want to install someone else's injectors.

Well they replaced not one but two injectors under warranty - now I have to wonder if the other 4 will last or if I should bite the bullet and get F1's ...trouble is I've not pulled/replaced injectors before and although mechanically competent, I've not done this before.
Is there a link somewhere to 'how to replace injectors' with pic's etc. for the CTD 5.9 (2005 preferred...) ? I haven't found one yet.

Other than the turbo throwing oil, is there something I should look/listen for that would indicate engine damage?

What causes these to go bad? 66k far too early in my books.

I would pull your oil filter and cut it open with a cut off wheel or even a hack saw at the threaded end to see if there is any metal in between the filter "fingers" or rows or whatever you want to call them. another thing that i did not think about was the turbo, it is lubed by the engine oil. make sure that the veins are not touching the housing. Fuel is a solvent and will wipe out the bearings. Good luck. (for a cheaper way to go for the injector nozzles would be extrude hone) google it.

A post script to this saga....After replacing the TWO injectors, I was noticing a sound from the turbo that was different.
Long story made short, I have a new turbo, installed under warranty. Hopefully that is the end of the story.

I had the same thing. My oil level would rise. After you turn off your motor, the injector depressures, leaking fuel into your cyclinder, past your rings and into your oil. If you have over 100k on your engine with the same injectors, I would replace all of them, I did. I did it myself with the help of some mechanic friends. I couldn't find a diagram or pictures of how to replace them on the internet. So I ended up buying a repair manual on ebay, pretty cheap. Good luck.

Just for those reading this thread, the injectors are not the only way fuel can get into the crankcase. We just had a trolley with the same Cummins engine with the same problem. The CP3 was leaking fuel into the cankcase.

Mr. Emond, Welcome to DTR.

There are folks here that will be happy to assist you, but you need to help us do that as well.

First, fill out your sig line with your specific truck and any mods you have done to it.

Second, please start a new thread so folks will see your particular problem and not just gloss past a thread that is nearly four years old.

Thanks!
