So what is the best way to drain the oil out of the pump? Would it be the gov spring cover? Also, you just run regular engine oil in it correct?

Are you pulling the pump? The oil drains from the pump thru the front back to the engine, and is fed by engine oil pressure thru a line.

I guess I would say the only time you should have to put oil in is when you put a new pump on.

I hope you're not talking about the plug on top of the AFC housing?

Yeah, the one that the starwheel is under. I am asking because one of the diagrams that Bill posted of the p pump shows that as an oil fill plug and I didnt know if the oil was from the engine supply or if it was a sealed system.

I think you are supposed to put a quart or so of engine oil in prior to starting a new pump. It must take some time to fill from the engine feed, and they don't want it to run dry for any period of time.

In some P pump applications you have to fill the pump with oil though the starwheel cover but not on our Dodges.
I've never heard it recommended to fill even a new pump on a Ram.

Every pump I've bought says to prefill the pump before starting. The plug in the AFC is for filling the pump with oil.

I've never put a new or reman p-pump on a Dodge, but I've replaced them on ag equipment and I'll say the same: there's always a sticker or tag (depending on where it came from) that says to add oil before running. I guess that's why it's labeled as an oil plug...
