Owners continue to complain about Ford's new diesel....

....So says the headline on this piece from yesterday's Autotech Daily..

"Multiple problems with Ford Motor Co.’s 6.0-liter V-8 Power Stroke diesel engine are chipping away the loyalty of longtime pickup truck customers and prompted the automaker to buy back a small number of trucks equipped with the engine, reports Reuters. It says one customer had his vehicle repaired six times while another had his truck in the shop for more than six weeks, and many other frustrated owners are sounding off in Internet chat rooms. The 320-hp engine, which is built by Navistar International Corp., bowed late last year on Ford’s popular F-Series Super Duty pickups and full-size Excursion SUV. Problems began to develop soon afterward, Reuters says, including diesel fuel leaking into the oil supply a situation that potentially could destroy the engine. Customers also complained their vehicles ran rough or stalled, experienced harsh shifting and lacked power at low speeds. Earlier this year, Ford recalled vehicles with the Power Stroke to replace a defective injection control pressure sensor and recalibrate the fuel injection and powertrain control modules. Since February, Ford has upgraded the software in the engine's computers three times and has two more upgrades pending to smooth idling and improve how the engine handles air-conditioning loads. The automaker says it fixed the more serious problems such as fuel mixing with oil during the recall, and expects the software changes to resolve most of the remaining complaints, which it terms as driveability issues. In some cases, Ford suggests owners inaccurately perceive problems because they aren’t used to driving a vehicle with a diesel engine. (That's a good one : ) The good news, Reuters says, is that some owners who had their vehicle repurchased by Ford have bought 2004 models of the ones they are replacing. Ford hopes to sell about 260,000 Power Stroke-equipped pickups this year. "

Why anyone, loyal to Ferd or not, would buy one of these problem plagued engines is beyond me. I would be nuts if my truck was in for service for six weeks.

My pops first D-Max was problem sticken and was in the shop more then on the road. He was goofy enough to buy another one though! But the dealer made the payments while his sat in the shop! To give you an idea of how bad this truck was he had a 3 year lease on it and after 8 months he took a bath on it and get a brand new 03. The 03 has dropped the tranny once and the injection pump once already!

I think I was right behind you in line. Actually had a deposit check in the truck and was heading to the Ferd dealer. Got delayed by work and that night rethought my plans. Two days later bought a CTD. Then the new CTD dropped the rear end with 400k on it. But since it has been great.

I’ve been a loyal Ford owner for 16 years since I had my first Mustang in High School. I consider myself lucky with my 99 7.3 PSD. There were many problems with that engine in the beginning, but mine has been problem free for the last 102K miles (except for cracking the Turbo :'( 12k miles ago, and that was my fault.) The dealer replaced the turbo under warranty, even with my mods, and chips still in the truck when I took it in to get the turbo replaced at my expense. However, I would not even remotely think about buying the 6.0 PSD, I’m currently looking at buying a new 04 CTD. The Cummins is just one fun and reliable engine to BOMB! ;D

no no no 400 just 400 like 6 hours of driving or 8@50 or 4@100. It was being picked up from one dealer and delivered to my selling dealer. Crapped out along the way.

Ford should just drop the 6.0L and go back to the 7.3L. And just keep the 6.0L in hush for a year until they get the problems worked out fully then come back out with them. Ya know?

My in-laws have the 7.3. They were MUCH happier with the old 6.9. Don't know about the 6.0, but the 7.3 hates farm diesel.

Like I said the 99newer psd don't like it. AT ALL. it will run alright but the dye eats a seal out in the high pressure pump and causes it to fail. I have seen more than one with this problem. we live on red fuel here where I live and most trucks never see anything but red fuel. The newer psd's just don't like it. I ran my 96 on it and still lost two injectors at 40k. don't know how or why.

Re:Owners continue to complain about Ford's new diesel....

I've owned four Ford trucks, my Harley, and 1999 Ford Cobra since 1979. I wanted an F-250 with a diesel so bad I could taste it. As a matter of fact I almost bought one anyway after reading about the problems. Brand loyalty was and is killing me. I hate to admit that the 6.0 truly sucks. Had I not had to go through a buy back on the Cobra I may have bought that F-250. Please don’t flame me but I think the Ford look better than the Dodge. There’s no comparison in the engine compartment though. When it’s all said and done, I really like this Dodge and won’t be going back to Ford. I’m even looking at a new Dodge car for my wife. Ford lost $35000 here and who knows how much in the future.

Re:Owners continue to complain about Ford's new diesel....

and 1999 Ford Cobra
Was '99 the year the Cobra wasn't living up to the manufacturer's claimed horsepower? Wasn't it something to do with the intake manifold? Was this the reason you had the dealer buy yours back?

Sorry for all the questions, and now back to our regularly scheduled thread.
