Overheating at low speeds and P0480 code
When at low speeds and doing some work (pushing through snow drifts, maneuvering trailer in the yard, pulling out tree stumps, etc.) my truck starts to overheat pretty quickly. I also pulled up the P0480 code w/ my Smarty (Cooling fan 1 control circuit).
So, I did the trick where you cover up the condenser and turn on the AC and the fan does its job just fine. This being said, does anyone have any ideas as to what would be making this happen? Is there another way to check the fan clutch? I have an ohm meter, if that helps.
Thanks in advance.

Sorry but no. I ended up having the cooling system flushed and replaced the fan clutch (wasn't necessary). I haven't had it overheat since however, my temp gauge will jump up to 200 degrees pretty quick, causing the fan clutch to lock up. Before this issue my coolant temp was always at 191 +/- 2 degrees. Good luck.

You may want to check the wiring that runs between the fan shroud and the radiator, near the bottom. I'm pretty sure that there was an issue with a wire rubbing through and grounding out but it may have just been the early 3rd gens. I would also make sure that the relay is functioning properly.

OHHHH. Forgot about the relay. Thanks. ill look at that next.
Wiring looks fine. Made sure I correctly routed the new wires. seen them get wrapped up in the fan before. Changed out a lot of these 3rd gen fan clutches.

I would go ahead and replace thermostat from genos then make sure all the air gets burped out. I don't think fan is supposed to engage with out ac until 210-215.
